Hi,
can anyone explain what happened inside my Intake Manifold? What can I do not to get the same a second time?

I tried to start my 1965 Hemi Coronet and cranked the engine for 2 seconds - there was a nasty bang - my intake manifold was cracked ...

It is a '65 Magnesium Intake, prepped by Dick Landy.

Thank you for your help!
Karl

one of the carbs was flooding, stuck float ect. a little trick to prevent that again is drill and tap in a relief valve like on supercharger intake, but the smallest lightest spring one you can get, put in back of manifold will never be seen, hope that was not an oe 64/65 cross ram ouch///

Welds? It's magnesium.....That would be a little tricky!

As suggested above, once the intake has been repaired/replaced install a pop off valve (a small one installed into one of the intake bolt access plugs works well, add one in 2 different plugs to feel extra safe).

This is a common problem with cross ram cars on the street, they don't like all the idling around, even with well setup carbs excess fuel can puddle in the intake when not running at higher rpms and when the fuel gets ignited it goes boom.

It was a joke. Jeez--don't you guys watch stupid movies.
Translations:
NAWZ would be super import dork for nitrous oxide.
LOLMAXX!!! would be 'laughing out loud a lot'--two X's and three exclamation points more than just LOL.
Man, try--just try--to make a stupid joke around here!

The factory cross rams tend to do that. They have very poor fuel distribution when cold so a backfire will often cause a small explosion. I had a Max Wedge crossram on my car years ago and it would often backfire during cold weather. It wouldn't start at all if the temp was below 50 degrees.

Usually guys keep their foot on the pedal when cranking so that an explosion can go out the carb rather than blowing up the intake. If the throttles were closed then the throttle blades in your carbs might be damaged also.

That is a major bummer, that backfire just ruined $$$ in parts for you.

That is what I was thinking held wide open backfire would have a relief.

FWIW that manifold is fixable, you just need to track down the right guy with the right equiptment...Theres a guy here in town that uses a laser for welding Magnesium, he also has a vacuum chamber for welding titanium...He doesn't work cheap but he can repair stuff that most would give up on...Go to your local welding supply, they would know who local might be qualified..

@Scott
any idea where I can get the proposed pop-off valve which fits into the intake bolt access plugs?
Thank you! Karl

i used to work in a metal shop that had a guy who TIG welded magnesium.

Anyplace that would sell industrial machine supplies for products like air compressors should have them.

Volkswagen Bug machine shops weld magnesium engine cases every day. Don't know who would have more experience with magnesium welding.
