What is the best way to disassemble a motor that is stuck. 383 been sitting many yrs in a shed on the back of the block upright, cyls were filled with oil, but too late. I have it down to the crank, rods and pistons. I don't care about the rods or pistons, but the crank journals look good and the block should be.
How do you get a stuck motor apart? Would like to not be as "crude" as possible, but the motor is going to be taken apart.

I've heard filling the cylinders with diesel or ATF works. Fill it, let it sit for a few days while topping it up, then put on your breaker bar.

since aluminum is pretty soft you might drill the heck out of each piston top until all rods are free from the pistons then lift the crank/rod assy's out then see about tapping what's left of the piston tops down into & out of the bores.

That's not a bad idea robert. If you have a carbide bit for your dremel, you could probably dremel out that area of the piston until the rod comes free, but I'm sure you'd end up nicking the bore, and the last thing you want to do is mess it up so bad you have to sleeve it.

The winner is AERO KROIL . That is what I started with yesterday after getting down to just the short block. Things were tight. Let set over night, came home from work and sprayed down again, then after dinner away I went. Some of the pistons came out like they were in butter . Got all eight out with out any damage to the block or crank. Journals all looked good as did the cylinders. It looked like they had taken the intake and exhaust manifolds off and turned up on end and the oil had moisture and turned to sludge. Now I have a good 68 383 and steel crank for sale.

Thanks for all replys.

Its like $14.00 a can...

It works because it is molecularly (is that a word?) smaller than most other penetrants. This allows it to creep into the smallest places most other penetrants cant.

My mother in law worked for them at one time.

Friend of mine had a pair of matching AFB carbs that had been stuck for a decade or more. He had tried soaking them in a tub of WD 40, and a host of other oils and penetrants. Finally he gave up. Few years later I gave him a can of kroil....one can. Sat over nite, and they freed right up.

You know I haven't even heard of that before until I went to work for Modine. They use it like it's going out of style. I've got a 440 stuck at the moment. I'm needing to get it apart. I'll probably try it, I never even thought about it before.

I'm still find this hard to believe , we had it at work and it SUCKED , WD 40 worked as good if not better .

I had never heard of KRIOL before a recent job change. I have used it on many thing that WD-40 would not touch with great success. It is by far the best penatrating oil that I have ever used.

Well then, youre the first person I have ever heard say it didnt work. After two decades in mechanical/maintenance, youre the only one.

I've unstuck about 5 motors over the years using automatic transmission fluid. Pour some in each cylinder and let it sit for about a week. Then go back and moved the crank back and forth until it breaks free. It worked every time for me.

I tried it on a stuck AVS , how many years do you have to leave the carb in there ? I left one in for a MONTH , it's STILL stuck SOLID

Put me on the Kroil bandwagon.

I used to buy my own and keep it in my toolbox, even though the shops I worked at stocked WD-40, CRC, Seafoam, or some other stuff.
