If it's smoking only on startup you might consider R&R the valve stem seals. A person could do an over the fender overhaul with a rering/bearing it which is dependant on how much out of round/taper the bores have & the amt of wear on the crank & pistons or it might be time (& faster) to change the eng but 1st I think I would do a compression & especially leakdown tests & find out EXACTLY how the patient is doing but from your description of the symptoms it does not sound good.

hopefully you meant BREATHER- singular and have a PCV valve on the other valve cover.

If there were piston or ring damage, it would smoke continuously and not just on start up.

do you have a pcv hooked up?

restore additive might help some with worn cyl and rings,I have had good luck with some preety worn engines and that seemed to help a lot...didnt foul the plugs up with deposits like other oil honeys

I agree on checking the valve seals and a comp/leak test first thing

if it busted the valve cover it might have blown the old harden seals apart also

should be able to get a looky see at them with just a R&R of the valve cover

a good on the head spring tool from KD and a 2 1/2 foot rope should put some cheap stock seals on over the fender like said

I have done more seals than rerings on used engines myself

any of the snake oil be gone honeys will slow it down some by thickining the oil up

they are a patch but ya gotta do what ya gotta do till ya can do it

yes i do have a PCV valve.....smoke is constant....a real bummer!!!!i looked at seals they look O.K.....is there a chance that a 537 lift cam (30/38) with stamped rockers could leave the valves
open after lifter pump? i run the hughes cam/lifter/spring set....again this combo worked prior to the top end pop...i will do the recommended comp/leak test...it my be semi denial on my part but with low miles on the SB just a drag....on the up side i have a fresh although stock rebuilt 40/440/ShortBlock(flattops/stock rods/cast crank,ect,)....so i guess i should be gratefull....anyways thanks again...

It sounds like you had better have someone take a look at it in person. You could have multiple issues after the explosion.
