I have a 75' 440 that has been bored to .030 over.

I also have a new set of cast pistons, flat topp's no valve relives cut in them.

they sit at.018 below the deck at t.d.c.

the p/n stamped on top say 2286p .030
I bought these some time back with none of the packing/ boxing etc.
can anyone cross thease pistons like brand,or details such as compression hight etc.

I would like to use them in my 440 since I have them allready have them....please need adice.

wino!

Something's wrong, with a piston compression height of 1.94" the piston should be down in the hole at least .140". Could the .018" be .180"? (decimal point)

The method I used was to put a straight edge across the cylinder resting on the block deck and used a feeler gage to check the piston at t.d.c.

feeler gauge was .018

the piston comes up to almost flush to the deck minus a gap from a feeler gauge of .018

is this correct?

A straight edge & feeler gauges will get you VERY close. 3.75 stroke(divided by 2)is 1.875". An RB rod is 6.768" & your CH of 1.94 gives 10.583 would be .142" in the hole with an advertized (RB)deck height of ~10.725". Whats been altered here.

maybe the compression height is wrong.

it is in a list of acceptable pistons...and all say 1.94 compression height...

It would appear to be though thats an ungodly amt to have been milled from a deck. The stroke & rod length doesn't vary too much & if that is the actual CH of those pistons then there's nothing else. Yes with .018" in the hole & the right gasket you can end up with excellent quench for your aluminum heads but stay on top of what your CR will end up being & enough valve/piston clearance.

The L2286P is the original forged NHRA replacement piston for the 68-69 440. It has a 2.034" CD

Same piston? I don't know.

You still need to cut the deck a bit to get a 0.018". Probably a 0.030" to 0.040" cut.
