My 1982 Dodge truck has water getting into the gas tank how???? Anyone have any ideas? I did drop the tank a few years ago and drilled holes in to the bed to get to the tank mounting bolts. This problem just started in the past 6 months. I mean lotsa water the gas I'm pumping out of it is coming out 25/75 gas water.

The only way to insure clean dry gas is to keep the tank totally full of gas when stored. I can't emphasize that enough.

You will never know for sure how much water is in there unless you can stick the tank for water with water paste.

I'm in the fuel business and use this stuff all the time.

Lastly methanol is idea for rinsing out the tank after it has had water in it. It's one of the few things that will totally get all the water out so your tank won't rust. You would have to remove tank again to use methanol since you have to dump all the methanol out by turning the tank upside down after rinsing. But it will totally dry out your tank.

Maybe the tank filler tube grommet is not sealing and rain water is running down the filler tube into the fuel tank??

Maybe the station you are buying your gas from has water in their tank. 25/75 is an awful lot of water to be condensation .

The poly tanks will split on top when they get old. Also, there should be an o-ring under the sending unit. Might be dry-rotted.

I posted a reply once all ready but I dont see it so I'll try again.

I think water was getting on top of the tank from the rearmost hole I drilled to access the bolts. I've sealed up this hole. We'll see if it cures the problem.

Take care,
Rick

That's just a poor band aid to the problem. Something is rotted or cracked. Sending unit sits in a pod area. Dodge packed the cavity with grease when new to prevent rusting through. If its been worked on and the grease was removed. My bets its rusted through. So rain, washing, and just about anything else will get in there.

I had my '92 w250's tank getting water in it...finally found out that the metal upper filler tube had rubbed thru were the bend was at the inner box panel...about a foot down from the filler.
