And how are you tuning the EFI?

Long story short, it's time to sell the grand national and I need a new project. Forced induction is just too fun to ignore, so I'm thinking of turbocharging a late 90's 360 magnum. EFI is also a must with me so I thought I'd see what others are running for an ECU to keep the multiport setup. If it's possible to reflash or modify a stock ECM that would probably be cheaper but tunability probably sucks.

Anyone here doing it? I think it'd be an ideal platform for a budget turbo engine, if I can keep the EFI costs under control.

I would not try to reflash the OEM ECU. To many new things to consider.

I can supply the FAST hardware that will handle any boost level and use your existing multiport manifold.

If you're interested I can send you an estimate, but I'd need a few answers to these questions:
* Would you be using a distributor?
* What boost level?
* Do you have a throttle body?
* Target HP range?

There is/was a supercharger system for the 97 and earlier ones. Don't know about the later ones.
Not sure how it was hooked up, but saw one or two for sale recently either here or on craigslist.
It was like a dealer option based on the description.
There must have been something for those.
Haven't seen anything for the 98 and up though.

Probably be using a stock late model magnum dist. Though i'd like some boost retardability at wot, not sure if that's possible with the stock dist. Boost level is undetermined at this time. Don't yet know if i'd build an engine around it or buy a crate motor and turbo it later down the road. Compression ratio makes a BIG difference, so does timing control. Basically would tune it to whatever I can get away with on 92. on my GN that's 19 psi. Doubt i'd get that out of a magnum though. Does your fast system have a knock sensor input? I like that a lot, some light knock is inaudible. Throttle body would be a stock magnum unless that is unusable for some reason. HP range would be whatever I got out of it. though it would be a mild build. Heads would get minor work with turbo in mind, turbo cam with factory hyd. roller lifters if possible, stock magnum intake, probably build off of stock type exhaust manifolds to start with. I know that stock hardware will get you a LONG way when it's under pressure. Budget is a word I will be using often.

I wouldn't use a stock mag intake, personally...the 2 piece construction (open plenum bottom with a gasketed base plate) probably won't hold up to much boost. at the very least you'd want to use the hughes bottom plate, which is relatively thick aluminum vs. the stock lightweight sheet metal. I'd probably just buck up and get an M1 single plane

plumbing, you're probably better off using an LS1/3G hemi/ford 4.6/5.4 type of throttle body on an elbow vs. a stock magnum one.

stock magnum dizzy is essentially just a hall effects trigger (no mech or vac advance built in), the computer controls all advance function....you should be able to use it for timing control

go over to Dakotart.com, there are many people over there running boost on their trucks. All late magnum blocks and some R3 blocks. Their is a variety of methods from stand alone systems to Tuning the stock pcm. One thing for sure is do not use the stock intake. Look at something like a Mopar M1 intake.

good info. one of the things that drew me to a magnum is that the efi is already sitting on it. if I have to do custom injector bungs, fuel rails, and throttle body, that really sucks. If I go aftermarket ecu I will want sequential. Don't need a built in boost controller but would use it if it was there. It will be chemically intercooled also. May start out NA with plans to turbo it later, meaning if I have to buy an aftermarket ECU to do that, I'd do it now.

I'll mill around on that website some and see what others are doing.

thanks

I'd use a dual-sync distributor to get the sequential injection.

You have total timing control with FAST, so boost retard, etc is totally programmable.

Yes, FAST works with a knock sensor.

Budget ??? Well that's another issue all together. The FAST ECU is $1600, and the main harness is $300. You could use your own injectors, manifold, throttle body, coolant sensor, etc. FAST does provide boost control as well. Good luck ...

That's cheaper than I thought it would be.

if you already have an ecu, contact hemifever on here. He does SCT tunes and can customize them for your vehicle. He does the ones for the magnum motor and will probably be way under that price. He can program you one for boost and then one for na.
when I get the money for my next upgrade he will be doing the tune for my truck.

MP sells an M1 single plane intake that uses stock injectors/fuel rails/throttle body, it's under $500.

hughes sells a modified eddie air gap magnum manifold to accept stock components, too

the magnum single plane carb manifold has bungs cast in, they'd just need to be machined, and then stock style injectors/fuel rails will fit....then an elbow that bolts to a square bore manifold could be used to then run a large single (hemi/4.7/LS1/ford mustang style) throttle body.

All good information. It's not that i'm broke, it's that i'm selling my gn to raise funds for something else not car related. May have a bit left over for a new project, but if I spend 5 figures on that new project, well why sell the GN then? Also the engine would remain mostly stock because of Smokey Yunick's advice "don't go breaking expensive trick parts while you're learning the ropes". I've done forced induction and efi before, but not a full custom fab/tuned setup. If I blew up a mostly stock long block while learning this I could swallow that mistake. Things that are hard to damage, I could be in the market for if I NEED them. May start with an entire junkyard swap and add/modify it over the next 5 years. I have acces to a free complete core at work and there is also one in my lifted 99 ram with over 200K hard miles on it that may be due for some upgrades. AND I have access to mopar crate motors for considerably less than average joe (the plumber ) would have to pay. Might pay to get familiar with these beasts. Thanks for the info and sources guys, and if I go with a fast box, I will look you up.

HA! I knew it was "Dakota" but my mind for some reason, threw an extra "A" in there, so my head kept telling me that it said "Dakota art" and I was like "hmm, never heard of that site before?"

then It clicked.
