Hi everyone,

I am currently running a 2 1/2" TTI Xpipe setup on a 550hp setup with superturbo mufflers. Are there any benefits of running the Ultra flows in 2 1/2". The car is for street only. Ultra flow makes 2 lengths. One is exactly the same length as my super turbo which is 20"s. The other is 14"s. Does it matter which length I choose?

Thanks

are you after more free flowing to free up some HP which will be noisier or more restrictive to quiet your system some which generally costs some power? to ans your Q a longer muff will subject the gasses to more muffling which will be quieter assuming the longer muff will fit your vehicle. Just me I'd keep the Dynomax's (they're a good muff) and add some glasspacks alongside the rear leaf springs for addit'l quieting. with that plan make sure your choice of GP does not neck down where the end nipples are welded to the case

RapidRobert,

I was just curious if I switched to the Ultra Flo's would I be gaining any hp over the super turbo's? I figured with using 2 1/2" exhaust with that much hp, the straight through design of the Ultra Flo's should help with more flow? If I am going to gain a couple of hp then I would just stay with the super turbo's. If we are talking 10hp then I would switch to the Ultra Flo's.

a straight thru would gain some over a "regular" type with a center nipple and an offset nipple. Not sure how much. I ain't an ex engineer but If I was serious & wanting to experiment, what I'd do to start is take a pressure reading in front and in the rear of the current muffs at WOT. Just WAG I think you'd notice the noise increase but not a performance increase. My pref is a restricted (quiet) system with open cutouts right at the collectors. with the money in a third parties' hand I open em up & 10 seconds later its all over but the cryin & the money is (now) in my hands then I close the cutouts

I have had Ultra Flow Welded (oval, 20-inch case) mufflers on my 71 Charger (440) and '79 CJ5 (AMC 304 V8) for over 10 years. I'm using 3-inch exhaust with H-Pipes. They do flow well (they should, as they are essentially glass packs) but are a bit noisy for constant street use.

I tried adding Dnomax bullet mufflers to the Charger (so, 4 - mufflers on one car), but it didn't help much with the noise level. Ear plugs are helpful on the freeway, else your ears will ring. I keep a set handy in the glove compartment.

Then again, a 2 1/2 inch system, all the way to the rear bumper, may help / be acceptable.

Seat of the pants, they DO seem to improve performance, but I haven't had either on a Dyno to verify by how much. The exhaust note while winding out, sounds (somewhat) like a Pro Stock engine.

Thanks guys,

Dynomax ultraflo at 1133 and Dynomax super turbo at 410 cfm looks like a huge difference. It might be worth the change.

I have the 2.5" TTI X-pipe system and the Dynomax welded ultra-flos in the short case on my car, with straight cut tips that exit and inch past the bumper and it's pretty quiet in the car. Rolling on the freeway at 70 (3000 rpm), I can hear the tire noise (and they aren't loud tires) over the exhaust. Other than pretty much right at 2000 rpm, they are pretty quiet. Not bad at all for mufflers you can see through.

Seems like you are in a perfect position to do some track testing of each and reporting back

I think I may have to buy a set and try them out. I would think they will make more power than the Super Turbos. Thanks everyone.

I have found the Hooker 2.5" Max Flows are at the same flow rating as 2.5" pipe, 521cfm! I love the sound of mine!

For a sound reference, I put a pair of super turbos on my 318 Dart, with a 2 1/2 inch system and a cross over, and you can barely here it run. If they truly do flow 410 each, that would equal a zero loss at 364 hp, or 2 percent loss at 410 hp.
Vizards book shows 2.25 cfm per open pipe hp equals no loss, 2 cfm equals 2 percent, 1.75 cfm equals a 5 percent loss.
My next engine is going to be roughly 500 hp, so I am looking at a loss of about 8 percent, or 40 hp, but the car will be very quiet for what it is. The loss might even be less, as the mufflers are where the spare tire used to be, at the back of the car.

I went ahead and ordered the Ultra flo's today. I am thinking with my hp range the Super turbos have to be restricting it.

You will see a noticeable power increase after putting the Ultraflows on.

The Hooker Max Flows are almost the exact same style of muffler as the Dynomax Ultraflow and will perform the same.
The Hooker Aerochamber is a little quieter and more restrictive than the Ultraflow or Max Flow, but performs way better than the Super Turbo.

Many years back (high school) when I heard the name "Turbo Mufflers", I thought they must have a Turbine Wheel inside that would spin to reduce noise, yet be less restrictive. Never tried cutting one open.

Of course, the name instead referred to mufflers used on Turbocharged Chevrolet Corvairs, designed to be less restrictive.

Also, what about "Muffler Bearings"?

I run the Ultra-Flows in my 3" full exh system thats out to the back of the car and I use the X-pipe. I can say it is not as noisey as many cars out there when idleing or cruising. But when I nail it then it is alot louder. But I can listen to my radio when cruising along with no trouble. Ron

Here is a clip of it idleing and driving off at light throttle.
