Sounds like the length you have is in the ballpark of "Stock". if heads or block are milled or thinner head gasket would be too long however. Best approach is to use a checker pushrod to get actual length needed then order from somebody like Smith Brothers or order to length Comp. Or if possible, determine how much "too long" the current ones are and order accordingly.

You really need to use an adjustable checking pushrod and get the correct length pushrods. Not sure which rocker arms you have, but the ones that oil the pushrod through the adjuster have a very limited amount of adjustment, usually from all the way up to two turns down where you would set the adjuster one turn down and adjust the checking pushrod for the proper lash or pre-load (if hydraulic.) The rockers that oil the pushrod with a hole to the edge of the adjuster may be a bit more forgiving in adjustment range?

From the Edelbrock Cylinder Head Installation Manual,

Quote:
Pushrods compatible with adjustable rocker arm assembly stock length
440 c.i.d.- 9.125” hydraulic flat tappet, 9.250” solid flat tappet

So, if you are having length issues, adjustable length check pushrod may be required to sort things out.

On my 440, I was able to use Factory HD Stamped Steel Rockers. Not Ideal, but cheap and they worked.

When I mounted the rocker arms/shafts, torqued them to spec, fired it up, there was a problem. The lifters hadn't pumped up. Had to loosen the shafts, run the engine a bit, then re torque to spec. That was 12-years ago, the installation that is.

I ran Crane 3/8s on my 440 for years and no problems. With the solid cam I had to swap to longer ones with the aluminum heads and adj rods. The hydraulics used the same rockers.Rocky
