I can't seem to get the dash cluster out. I know I have to disconnect the
speedo cable but I can't get to it. Help!

What year? Through 67 the cable screws on. 68-later that cable snaps into place with a single plastic tab that holds it in place.

1971, so I just pull down on the tab and pull the cable out?

I think you have to squeeze the tab not pull down.

Squeeze the tab and pull it out. Make sure to drop your steering column by removing the three bolts to the firewall and the three nuts holding the column to the dash frame. It will rotate down enough to pull the cluster from the top. Grab it up top and rotate down on it. Be very careful with the two connectors on either end that plug into the pins, very easy to break a pin off! wave Also it is best to remove the headlight switch pull knob by reaching under the dash and pushing in the pin that holds the knob bayonet to the switch, you can then pull the bayonet and knob out getting it out of the way. Be careful of the wiper knob also, it can scratch the cluster housing. twocents

The funny thing about science is that if you change one miniscule parameter you change the entire outcome to the way you want it.

I have the column out and have the wiper switch/head
light switch unscrewed.
(i'm painting my dash) and need the pad off.
the pins will be a slow pull for sure!

I might take this time to change out the amp meter with
a volt meter, but that's for another question,LOL

okay, I got the dash out and took the pad off. Now I am seriously thinking about putting an volt meter in place of the amp meter.
does any one have directions, or a schematic for that?

I don't have the details for you, but I'd go ahead and do it while you have it out. As you now know its kind of a pain to pull the cluster so take advantage and do it.
