Does anyone know the overall length of a shortshaft torqueflite vs a powerglide? A buddy and I are looking at a FED chassis, it's setup for a Hemi and glide and I'd like to run a torqueflite if possible.Dave

No disrespect meant, but why run a TF?

We've got lots of parts for T-flites including convertors.

Sounds to me like that 605 in a FED leaving in second gear (Torqueflite) ought to rock smile

Greg, Kevin and I are looking at one, it had been set up with a blown Hemi. If things check out we'd probably throw a mild wedge in it to get our feet wet. Down the road a 605 might end up between the frame rails.Dave

if the TF makes you move the engine forward...... you are definitely going in the wrong direction.

There is a 4wd version that has a pretty short tailshaft. Mid-'70s I believe when they used a short driveshaft between the trans and transfer case. Should be similar in length to a Glide.

A shorty kit from Cope Racing would make it even shorter.

But the length on a truck short tailshaft transmission is 30.58" without the yoke, 34.12 with. Should be found in 72-74 4wd and I think all 2wd. I don't know how long powerglides are.

I've seen the short 2wd TF in a 81' 1/2T club cab. I just didn't know length. Dave

"Short" is a relative term; the shortest 727 tail that I've seen was used with the divorced transfer case circa early seventies.

Keep in mind that the factory tailhousing had to be long enough to contain the park/governor assembly. The aftermarket setup would likely be the shortest because it has no provisions for the governor.

This is the best picture I can get of my 74 4x4 truck, measured from the engine block along the top. They are pretty short but not powerglide short without the aftermarket kit.

I did some poking around, and the best info I could glean was the TF with the aftermarket out put would be about 20 1/4? That is about 2 3/4 inches longer than a shorty glide. Any idea of how much room there is between the bell housing surface and the pinion ?

B&M,Fairbanks and others used to make a short tail housing and shaft for dragster/clutchflite trans.

Thanks for the replys, I'll find out on Monday. It's very old chassis so I have my doubts that it will pass certification.Dave

But you could do it in the FED with a warmed over juice cam 318! My thoughts were it would as reliable as a hammer!
