I have to make a decision on what crank to use in my Hemi. It will be a 572", I ordered Stage V big valve heads from MCH which will get his CNC treatment. I've decided to forgo street use so it will have high compression and a big roller. Sending the MP x-ram to FHO for their cut/weld/port program. By all accounts it should approach 1000 hp. So the question is, does this engine need a billet crank to live at that hp level? I have built some strokers, but nothing with this much steam so I'm a little concerned about a non-twist forging. Any advice would be greatly appreciated Marc

Thanks guys, appreciate the input Andy, Great minds think alike I guess I spoke with Chuck two days ago about doing the machine work. I have to take some wedge stuff down to him shortly so I'll discuss cranks with him in person then. Thanks , Marc

Billet crank for 1000 hp is a waist of money .
You can make 2500 hp with a forged crank easy.
yep a 440source crank should do the trick

Well, you can go ahead and build 2500hp and use a forged crank, I wouldn't
I realize that a billet crank may be overkill for what I'm building, but I want to be able to beat it and have it live. Not having had 1000hp+ Hemis in a heavy car with a stick I just want to be sure it's built right
Thanks again and Happy New Year !!
Marc
2 of my small blocks have billet cranks(I got the cranks at a good price) but on the BB that I'm building I bought a forged Callies from Chuck(Best Machine) and the BB will be right around 1000hp. Chuck is doing some work on the crank for me right now(turning down the counter weights to balance and move the weight in closer to the centerline. Have Best Machine do a balance job on your crank...... GREAT WORK. I have spun my small block to 9000+ but didnt see any increase in power so I only turn it to 8200 (they balanced all my stuff)

I agree a billet crank at 1000hp would be a waste. Callies Magnum will take A LOT of power...

You could also have them cut out some weight. Here's a 4.5 stroke Callies cut light. Callies make a very nice crank, both billet, and forged.
BOING!!!!! WHAT WORK OF ART!!! Could we make a table lamp out of it so I can buy one an look at it all day long????

I think you could make twice that hp with a Callies Magnum and sleep like a baby at night

2500HP is a bit steep, but if you check out the December '08 issue of HOT ROD magazine, you'll see that using a 440 Source crankshaft, they made 1,434 horsepower.
Yes, that's ONE THOUSAND, FOUR HUNDRED and THIRTY FOUR horsepower. Can you really justify spending 5-7 times as much on a billet crank, for an application that will "approach 1000 horsepower" ?
If you could build a nice house for 200K, would you instead spend a million dollars to build it completely out of 2" thick steel plate? How are these situations any different? If someone does it to make themselves "feel better" then that's completely up to them, as long as people don't try to mislead them into thinking it's necessary for power levels in the 1000-1500HP range. At least not any more necessary than it would be to build a house out of 2" steel plate.

If the cost isn't an issue get a Bryant, and you'll most likely never need another at that power. Unless of course something comes out.
And do not overook CROWER, either. They have supplied me with some high level crankshafts that all have been top notch in every respect. Not for the budget minded, but you really can see and measure the quality in these cranks, especially when compared with some of the overseas stuff.

First I'd like to throw out the disclaimer; I'm, like most people, thrilled you're making a mopar specific line of parts, and they can't be beat for the money, no doubt.
Making big power with that type crank can obviouly be done and lots are. I know from experience in hundreds of cases, and it's no exaggeration that when you're in a thousand Hp range you can't compare a less expensive crank to a upper level crank over time. We've done literally hundreds of motors over the years for customers in that range and when we use inexpensive cranks they just don't hold up over time. Sure they'll make it right off the bat, but when you look at bearings between two similar HP engines, one with an inexpensive crank, and one with an expensive crank the effects are plain to see. I'm not crapping on your parts, just stating a proven fact. I would buy the best budget would allow for a crank, because in that area, (for me) the long term benefits out weigh the initial savings for that type power.
To ad to that, my 21 year old son is finally showing interest in cars, and we're talking about building a 500 inch motor together on the tightest budget we can just to see what we can get. My intentions are to use your parts and heads for his first build. I'm sure for the combo it will be more than respectable, and will live just fine at it.
