Which way does the o ring/gasket face in the pinion housing if you are looking from the outside of the transmission looking in? Does the snap ring go in after it to retain it? Looks like there is no groove for the snap ring??

The "flat" side of seal faces out and it seats on a slight step in the speedo housing IIRC. The little wire ring rests up against it then and does not fit in a groove.
