Hi all,

Both driver and passenger side hinges on my '71 Satellite have issues. The passenger side is worse, as the retainer at the bottom of the vertical pin appears to be broken:

What is my best course of action here? Does anyone offer a rebuild kit for '71-74 B-body hinges? Or would it be better to replace them with new ones, such as those offered by Classic Industries?

http://www.classicindustries.com/product/mopar/parts/mm1895.html

As always, any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Roger

The ones on my '71 Charger, I disassembled and rebuilt myself with hardware store parts.

On my '74 Dodge Power Wagon I bought, degreased, repainted and installed a lightly Used hinge that was still in good condition.

A good quality rebuild Kit should be available. Year One or others sell rebuild components or complete hinges:

OEM number was superseded by a truck hinge...

Don't know if they're still available...

Unless you have to stay 'stock'...

No, this car has been heavily modified, so I'm not really concerned that they be stock. However, I'm thinking it might be better if I could rebuild these, since they're already body color. If I buy new ones, I'll have to get them painted = more hassle & cost. I know Resto Rick offers a nice hinge rebuild kit, but it's only for '66-70 B bodies. Does anyone offer a good kit for '71-74 hinges?

Would these rebuilt one fit, YearOne is clearing them out for $125.00 to $150.00.

If they will work, use code SLAM5 to get 30% off.

If possible, it's usually better to rebuild stock originals, than to use Chinese stuff that may, or may not be as good.

I just found this rebuild kit, for only $45:

Classic Industries 71-74 B-body door hinge rebuild kit

Has anyone tried this one, and how did it work out?

Check with Resto Rick. I bought his kit with the right drill bit for my 69 Charger and it worked great.

Drill em out, put a new pin in and done. Or if you don't like that, rock auto sells hinge pin kits for dirt cheap. Same thing, you drill your old pin holes open, pop the bushings in, drop the pins in and done.

I lookedat the picture, the only thing i see is wrong is the roll pin, or spring pin is broke at the bottom, probably due to rust. I think everything else looks fine. You can but a pin kit from NAPA for about $13-15. I just rebuilt my hinges, i made some parts and bought some. I have the correct length spring (roll) pins and American made springs if you're interested. I also have a couple of arms that hold the door open, and can make the roller that it rides on. Those parts are made of good quality steel. PM me if interested. Joe

Some of those don't fit correctly, be careful with AMD. Three years ago I bought a AMD set from YearOne that was junk. I just bought the clearance rebuilt set for my 69 Charger from YearOne with a 30% off sale code - SLAM5.

Another option is to use the later B Body Hinges with the "S" spring. P/Ns 3788022 and 023. I did this to my 73 cars. Not sure if they're available as repros. I bought mine from Ma Mopar when they were still available.

I appreciate all the suggestions, guys. A couple days ago, I removed the lower passenger side hinge, and confirmed that the roll pin holding the vertical roller in place had slipped out, thus allowing the roller to bind up. I compressed the spring, drove the pin back in, and it seems to be working for now. While I had it out, I realized that rebuilding all four hinges is a bit more work than I want to tackle. After the 30% discount, a set of four re-manufactured hinges at Year One is only $105 (thanks, Car Nut!!), so I just ordered a set. After I paint them, I'll swap them in and they should be good for another 40 years.

Thanks again.

Roger

I bought a rebuilt set from YearOne a few weeks ago and they painted up nicely and bolted up perfectly.

The set they shipped looked like rebuilt originals to me.

Is there a easy way of replacing the hinges on a painted car without removing the doors ? Or is removing the doors a must , and I would imagine pretty heavy . Can't remember the last time removing a door on a 71 B Body

My lower hinge , the spring is gone , stopper

i wouldn't waste my money on them just because of the cheap kind of metal they use.
the originals didn't last very long made with a real material
these doors are pretty heavy fully loaded.
i just cannot see the amd ones lasting very long unless
you rarely open your doors.

Which is exactly why I went with 'truck' hinges...

They get lubed once a year...

They will outlive me...
