Hey Guy's. just purchased a Carter Mechanical Fuel Pump For 340 It has 1/4 NPT female inlet/outlets. also purchased aeromotive 1/4 NPT to 8AN adapter fittings. I get MAYBE 2 threads screwed in before hand tight, & cant imagine getting much more with tightening allthough I have not tried yet for fear of breaking pump housing or fitting.instructions also state, NOT to use Teflon tape, so to me that would mean fittings would need to be seated pretty good for chance of no leak. what are your thoughts? Thank you

you don't use tape but you need to use some Teflon paste.

Take the pump apart and tap it deeper so you can get more threads

yeah, that's what I'm leaning towards, think I would feel the most comfortable.

are you sure the carter pump doesn't have an inverted flare and not an npt?

i just looked at the M60514 pump and it looks like it has a 3/8 inverted flare.

You can be looking at 2 things that are out of spec..
the pump might be on the small side and the fitting
on the large size.. I see it a lot... easiest thing
is the run a tap in deeper into the pump(take it apart)
EDIT
the reason is the coating they put on the pump and
the fittings... its done after the threads are cut

I just bought the same pump and I just used Teflon tape and tightened the fitting with a 1/4" drive ratchet till it stopped and then added my inverted flare fitting. No leak at all. I wouldn't do anything till you see you have a problem.

Myself I dont like the fitting sticking out that far..
too easy to break them off... if you have your next
fitting on it and bang into it, its likely to break
off right at the pump

I would take the bottom off and run a 1/4NPT tap thru it too open it up a little, then seal it with some teflon paste.

Personally, after seeing that I too would run a tap, make sure it's a NPT Tap and go in so more threads are sent into the pump. Just don't go crazy with the tap.And remember to put a little grease on the tap so the shavings don't go into the pump but stick to the tap.

Sometimes the details Summit gives on their website are not correct, My Aeromotive fuel pump had different fittings than what was listed on Summit's site, which threw me a curve ball after buying the wrong fittings.

I'd prefer taking the cover off over grease , but when tapping with a pipe tap , go maybe a turn at a time.
They open up quickly , so it isn't going to take a whole lot to sink the fitting in where you want it.

Wondering why you're running 8AN(1/2") into a 1/4" fitting??? , sounds like choke city to me.
