Another vote for the Pennzoil Synchromesh. My trans shifts much better than it did with gear lube.

Well the owners manual for my 68 Barracuda makes no mention of what type of oil goes in the A833 just give capacities. However, the service manual I have states the A833 uses ATF and there is a note: "NOTE: If gear noise or rattle is experienced with the A833, SAE 90 gear oil maybe used in place of the ATF."
I have seen (but don't have a copy) TSBs that basically say the same thing to replace the ATF with gear oil if the customer is complaining of gear noise.
So, yes the factory did put ATF in A833's. Maybe not all years but certainly in some.
You only read the specifications, its in the care and maintenance section.

Most people don't recommend it, but I've been using ATF in my 81 short bed since I started driving it back in 2000 cause it was already in it. Haven't had any issues with it.

Not in my manual. I went an pulled it out and went through it.
Like I have said twice before over the years mopar has spec'd gear oil and ATF in the A833. So, pick the lube you are comfortable with.
