Need to upgrade my fuel system on my street/strip Satellite. It's adequate for street use but has started to run out of fuel at the top of third when I've gotten on it on a hill (highway onramp).

Right now the engine is in the 525 HP neighborhood, car should run mid 11s but hasn't been down the strip yet as I'm still sorting it out. Plans in the near future are for headwork and 600-650 HP.

I'm thinking 1/2 inch pickup and fuel line up to the mechanical pump, with one Holley black pump. 9/16 line from the pump to carb with a dead head fuel pressure regulator. Does this sound sufficient? I would think that this should be more than enough but I really don't know.

Why the 9/16 line... the 1/2 is your choke/flow
and is more than enough.. I assume you would run on
the mech pump and turn on the black when racing

On my car I used AN-8 from the pickup at the tank to my mechanical Clay Smith pump. From the pump to the carb also used AN-8 and Holley reg. Deadhead system.

I went with 1/2" stainless tubing from tank to frame rail by pump, -8 hose from tubing to pump then back to the tubing from pump to regulator, 3/8" tubing from regulator to each carb on a 572 hemi. Tim

Sorry Mr P - I meant 3/8 I just doubled it when I typed it up.

Is there a reason I couldn't run the black full time?

You would be getting marginal with 3/8.. I would
run 1/2 just in case... you can run the pump all
the time

I use to use a Holley blue 110 GPH electric pump between the tank and the Carter 3 valve NASCAR mechanical fuel pump on the motor without a regulator on my old NHRA 426 C.I. Max Wedge Stocker. The mechanical fuel pump will and does act as a pressure regulator My message is don't waste your time and money on a regulator now before trying that electric pump working in series with your mechanical pump A 1/2 inch O.D., 7/16 I.D. line, is fine as far as I've used for motors up to 700+ HP My new drag car will have a 5/8 O.D., #10 AN size, hardline from the pump to the pressure reg. mounted up front in front of the carb. due to shooting for 850 +HP carbureted now with EFI in the potential future for more power with a power adder later. I'll use #12 AN from the tank to the 500 GPH electric pump to start with, over build it once instead of doing it twice BTW, how many GPH is that Holley black pump rated at

I like the KISS method.... I ran 1/2 line up to the passenger fender to the regulator then used two 3/8 lines from there to the carb. I used the Holley Blue pump with regulator. Works fine on my car. No pressure problems. My motor is over 650hp. I run it on the track and street with no issues.

I just run a stock fuel tank and a stock 3/8 sending unit. I use just the Holley black pump with 3/8 line to the deadhead regulator and to the carb an 850 DP. Its been feeding my 440/493 fine and it works nice driving on the street all the time as I drive it alot. Ron

Thanks for the info guys.

Heres another question, looks like the Holley Black uses 3/8 NPT input and output. I can't find a flare nut for 3/8 NPT for 1/2 inch line anywhere, what gives?

Put a adapter from 3/8 to 1/2.... also I like to drill
out the adapters to get a bit more flow

I'd very interested to see some pics of where you mount the pump when you get to that point. I am going to have to go the electric route on mine.

You should mount all electric fuel pumps, unless the instructions say other wise, as close to the tank as possible and lower than the bottom of the tank

What are your future plans/goals? My advice would be to go somewhat overkill on the lines. It gets pricey replacing lines and fittings 2 years from now when you build a new motor or decide to add a little spray. Ask me how I know .....I would go with -8 minimum from the tank to pump and from pump to regulator (skip the mechanical pump), and -6 from regulator to carb. Just my

Right, but I was referring to specific location as in on the inside or outside of the frame rail, mounted to a bracket, clearance from mufflers, etc.

Not sure, I was thinking inside the rear frame rail where it goes up over the axle assuming it looks good in relation to the sending unit when I get under there again. I'll have to get under it and look around once the snow melts.

Will a mechanical pump draw through an electric pump when on the street just driving around? I wouldn't mind having an electric pump at hand for race duty, but it would be nice to be able to drive around town on just the mechanical pump.
(sorry for the hi-jack)

Looking at the Carter rotary vane pump. Reading around on this a little, most seem to recommend using a parallel line around the elec. pump with a check valve. Would you say this would be good practice, Mike?

I've never done it... to me the check valve would have
to be big... same ID as the line... but I've never done it...
I either run a mech or a elec... but thats me

I have a friend with a carter electric (not sure which one) that the mechanical pump wont pump through, he's gotten stranded a couple of times over the years when the electric pump dies, so it must depend on the pump.

You could do like I do. I run just an electric pump on the street but I do carry a spare pump with me. I run the Holley electric pump and I have never had it fail yet but its good to be prepared. I also carry a spare coil , ballast , dist pick-up and dist cap & rotor. Ron

I'm a huge fan of the quieter gerator vane pumps such as the HP125 Holley or Mallory 140 along with a 100 micron filter. And also running a return line system! Just run one GOOD electric pump with return and it will last for years! Do it once, do it right.

Of course use a return style regulator and I'm a fan of -8AN single line to the carb with the inline gauge and another 40 micron filter.

Remember, same size line up & back (1/2" with your future add-ons). Simple with the new 1/2" stock pickup tubes for stock tanks now (Vansauto.com). Most of the tanks have an "extra" vent line you can use for the return- or with a new tank, weld on a bung & fitting for it.

i don't know, but it seems to me that fuel systems get way overthought and over bought.

i run the stock 3/8" fuel line and pickup to a carter mechanical pump from mancini. from there i run 5/16" line to a tee, and 5/16" line to both carbs. essentially, it is a stock hemi system.

the pump was supposed to self regulate to the 5.5-6psi that the carters need, but was all over the map, as high as 10psi. i got another pump from them, the same. so i hung a holley regulator directly off of the pump. other than that, this is a stock system.

so far i have no indication of starving for fuel, and i run 2 650 edelbrocks. granted, i haven't taken it down the track, so i don't know what it will do after 10-11 seconds of full throttle, but if there was an issue i could most likely up the pressure at the regulator and that may solve it, even for the track.

so a basically stock system is feeding 540" and 1300cfm, so far with no issues. and yes, i do pound it!
