I'm taking a class in High Performance Engine Machining at Sinclair Comm. College in Dayton, OH. I had a set of 576 casting small block heads that I just did a valve job on, and then put them on the flow bench, just to see what they would flow stock. They were 206 on the intake, and 166 on the exhaust side, both at .600 lift. Is that within a good range? So I just wondered if anybody else has flowed some small block heads, and what they came up with. I know they talk about the X heads are supposed to be good, and the 308's, but does anybody have any numbers? Just curious.
Thanks,
Dan

Shady Dell Speed Shop has flow numbers on their website.

Here is a link to their website which shows the flow numbers for a J-head:

http://www.shadydellspeedshop.com/jhead.htm

You can find other flow numbers for other heads on their site as well.

Your results are right on. I have flowed them stock and that is about exact. I will go through the data sheets later today and update. Now start porting and see where they end up. On a good port job I get 275 intake and 210 exhaust.

I've flowed many stock small block heads, all drop off above .475 lift. my bench flows at 25 " test pressure. this is mopar, chev and ford heads. higher test pressure gives higher flow numbers,

Thanks to all of you guys that replied. It was nice to know that everything seems to be on the up and up. The heads are going on a "stocker" style engine, so I can't do any porting, but it is good just to know where they're at.
The information was greatly appreciated!
Thanks again,
Dan

You are right about that, no porting allowed but make sure the valve job goes all the way to the intake plenum.

I put a post on Classracer about how far the VJ could go into the pocket, but never got an answer from anyone. I was thinking that it could go up to the bottom of the guide, or maybe a bit further? The thinking there seemed to be anything goes as long as it is radially symmetric off the guide centerline (same distance all the way around).

You can pay big bucks for a stock eliminator valve job

It's a lot of work, but most accurate comparisons are when different heads are flowed on the same bench. 360's had a factory cut that went down into the bowl, but apparently everyone is allowed to do that now, as mentioned, cut off of the guide. Different angles and valve designs can change results as well.

When I built my stocker my heads were done by the late Don Studley. My Aspen Wagon went .885 under first day at the track. Car is now in Vegas leading an awesome race life. Myron, Been following you since you were driving the Locomotion Challenger. You career has been awesome in Crate Motor also. matt

I was thinking of buying the tooling from Goodson or Regis to do guides and a Serdi style cutter I can use in my mill. I'd have to build a flow bench too. I'm sure there is a lot of testing to do with various cuts. I've seen stocker heads run $3-4k and up, so that would pay for the tooling. I have more time than money these days.

Stocker heads are hundreds of dollars "porting" and thousands of dollars "hiding"

Here are my numbers, a result of DYI home porting job using the MP SwirlHead porting templates:

596 castings, I had the machine shop go over them, they put in new Manley severe duty valves, 2.02/1.60, 11/32 stem, new bronze guides, and a standard 3 angle valve job. I ported them using the MP porting templates, here are the flow numbers (flowed on SF-600 @ 28" water):
