Would think you could try it out, as is, and see what happens. If you were living in Phoenix Arizona and had Air Conditioning and towing a trailer the answer might be different.
All else equal, it would be nice to swap in a 26-inch radiator, but I can understand your not wanting to cut a larger hole in your radiator support.
Some things to consider.... Do you have enough airflow generated by your cooling fan? If you have an automatic transmission, do you have a separate transmission oil cooler? Will you have a larger capacity engine oil pan? That should help too. Also, do you or will you have a well designed radiator shroud?
A 4-core radiator might help too. Greater capacity, yet some argue that efficiency decreases as you go from 3 to 4 core thickness.
Some advocate Aluminum versus original Brass radiator construction as being more efficient as well.

My 440-6 is a factory 22" rad car. it is currently running around 450hp with no issues though I did recore it with a high performance 3 row "dimpled" core. ...personally, I'd do quite a bit as far as core upgrades before I'd hack my rad support. Dave

It comes down to how often you will be at full power. The 22 should be fine for daily use and some strip use. If your going endurance racing you need much more. Burning fuel makes the heat...
When I'm out at Willow Springs running lap after lap I don't have any cooling issues. There is so much airflow it cools well.
But if it's 95 degrees out and I'm stuck in a LA traffic jam moving 1/4 miles in 15 mins, it will get up to 190.
I have a champion 4 core, with shroud and viscous jag clutch. I don't run anti freeze though, just Justice Brothers Radiator Cool Additive and distilled water.

I have a the original 22" 3 core max cooling radiator for my 71 demon, but I'm wondering when I go to a 426" or so, 500HP is this going to keep it cool or do I have it recored with more fins per inch? What have you seen with your strokers and 22" radiators? I don't want to cut it up for a 26". Thanks
I have pretty much that exact car, 422 stroker, 530HP, stock 22.00 radiator restored/recored by Glen-Ray to max cooling specs, stock shroud and fan, works fine in all conditions (and I don't baby it!).

By Max Cooling Specs, do you mean tighter fin count.
I think Troy did that with a tighter fin count in his 472 Hemi Dart stroker with a stock 67-69 A-body radiator. He's not running a shroud and runs an OE viscous fan clutch. He doesn't have any issues. Hemi hood scoop might help cooling?

Maybe max cooling was the wrong word, I have the "976" radiator, it's a stock three core 22" that was found in some 71 340's.

There is only one CORE in any radiator.
That CORE might have one, two, three or four ROWS of tubes in it though.
That all being said what you need to concern yourself about is HP, the radiator does not care if you have a turbo 2.0L, a stroked 360 or a 440 all putting out 500hp, all it cares about is heat and that is a function of HP.
They say there are no such thing as a stupid question. They say there is always the exception that proves the rule. Don't be the exception.
