I was wondering if anyone has mounted this style of Desno alternator (91-93 Cherokee 90 amp) on an LA small block? Were you able to do it with stock brackets or modified stock brackets? Anyone know if there is a 2-groove v-belt pulley that will swap on? Photos?

I have one on my Challenger. Stock brackets. I did grind on the case a little to clear the bottom bracket. You'll see what I mean when you mock it up.

I used this one on my 440 with stock non a/c brackets pullies.

external regulated using stock VR on firewall.

I flipped mine to move BATT stud away from head so I did not have to grind the stud down. (which seems needed on some apps)

got this off a van that still used external VR, crimped on eyeloops for field wires and trimed plastic off BATT wire so just the eyeloop was left to go into the shield on alt.

late 80s early 90s van and on the tbi 88-91 trucks

Did it have the 2-groove pulley? Did you end up running the belt in the front or rear groove?

Thanks to everyone for all the info!

Single groove pulley. Don't know what it came off from. I went to my local auto parts where they rebuild alternators and just went through the pile. If it was a dual it would be on the inner pulley.

Thanks for the info. Guess I'll just have to try and grab one at the local bone yard and try and mock it up.

I used a tiny one from a Geo metro, I think its 35A but might be the same frame. Used a long ass lower timing cover bolt and a slant alternator bracket with a litte trimmming. I centered and welded the lower pulley off the metro to a damper bolt washer (both sides) and torqued it on, it aint moving.

I also run the little 35-45amp alternator. I seem to find it listed under a Suzuki Samurai. But I know I got it off a Chevy Nova (rebaged Geo) or Geo Metro in the junk yard.

Id like to run the honker off my 06 minivan on something (emergency lawnmower generator?) but its got a bad decoupler on it and a ribbed pulley. wonder if I can swap the decoupler for a V pulley. its a 160A !

are you wanting the 1 wire internal regulated alt or a external regulated denso alt?

the 88-89 trucks/vans have the v groove pullys and work with the stock VR on the car or truck.

the 1 wire alt needs a little more to work, needs the 2 wire plug and a extra wire/larger BATT wire. IIRC.

you may be able to find an alt shop/rebuilder local that can swap the pully out for a v-groove.

I have a local rebuilder that has everything to rebuild the mini alt/starters for 65$

What I'm after is more output, especially at idle, because I'm upgrading to FAST EZ-EFI 2.0 with an in-tank pump. I want to stick with the stock external voltage regulator, and I'm hoping for minimal mods to the existing brackets, pulleys, etc.

Did you happen to weigh the alternator you used? How does it compare to the late 60's, early 70's mopar factory alternator?

Whatever you decide to go with watch out for the one wire alternators. I run them on both of my cars...neither charges at idle, but they work fine for everything else. I used the chrome one that Summit sells...can't remember the name...

the small one on my 88 truck is about 1/2 the weight. the one in the pic off 440 is a 120 amp denso and is the same or a little less best guess.

PM me I have some on the shelf I will scale for you
