I will hold out to see what mopar-wholesale sells them for but i'm going to get one. Ever since 340Rick posted pictures of his pistons, I wanted to build another one. Ill save the Apache heads for the next build

Yes, mine is now 4.09 but I have some cylindet walls under .1

I don't think you can compare the sonic #s with the old standard.
Most of the production blocks are thin but hold up very well. I think it may be the high nickel content of the new blocks

In that case I may look into getting one myself and just use this 5.7 block I have for mock up in the car.

This is great news!! These new 6.1 blocks will render the 6.4 VVT blocks worthless to the aftermarket and I can buy them for pennies on the dollar!!

what I'm wondering is, how thick are the cylinder bores in the 5.7 blocks? is there any difference between the 6.1 and 5.7 at all?

Some have said the early 5.7's could go to 4.00 bore pretty easy. The 6.1 ALL had 6.1 cast in the skirt by the pan rail and they ALL had oil jets installed. If you are wondering about wall thickness, I wouldn't be surprised if they are similar.

The early 5.7's were never designed for anything more then what they did and as soon as they started going over 400 hp the cylinders would not stay round. That's part of the reason SRT came out with the 6.1's so they could design in reinforcements inside the casting to increase the structural integrity that was needed for the increase in horsepower.

I don't know about that, the early 5.7's (03-05) are supposed to be the beefiest of the early blocks and plenty of them well over 600 HP and I've never heard of a cylinder wall distortion issue, especially at 400 HP, which is pretty low. As a matter of fact the 5.7 is supposed to have beefier cylinder walls than a 6.1 as a general rule. The 6.1 was designed on its own merit and not because of a "problem" with the 5.7, I'd even guess the 6.1 was designed almost side by side with the 5.7 at the onset of Gen III HEMI design (2000 ish?)

Now a 6.1 block with a 5.7 bore that would be feasible. And have plenty of meat

I've never seen anything happen to a block in either format.

I've seen really bad machine work kill a 426 and I've seen stock block 5.7's go low 11's in a 4000+ car.

All of these block issues are nothing billet mains and a 1/3 fill wont fix. It's been done and it works.
