I got a phone message from Kevin Moore today. He received an email from Mopar saying the 6.1 blocks ought to be out late Feb, early March. Great news! At less than a grand, a brand new block honed to 4.055 only needing cam bearings! My motor will be 401.68 cubes, a bit better for the Apache heads!

09 and up 5.7 and 6.4 are both Variable valve timing (VVT) blocks, which have different cams, covers, and cranks. They need more room up front to package all this, so the front of the block is different. Not sure on the cranks, but they need a different shape on the front, not sure how that is accomplished.

how far can you bore a 6.1 block?

They,Mopar, have said they NEVER re-cast ANYTHING without revisions/improvements. I hope one of those is a cylinder thick enough to 4.20 ish. THAT would be a step in the right direction. Maybe they have applied some of the same cooling tweaks as the Hellcat block. The old 6.1 blocks were simply assembly line blocks left over when they switched to the 6.4 in 2010-11. I have no desire to buy a VVT block of any kind.

I here about .020 is it. The only other option for a non VVT block is the aluminum block, ($4,000) which I believe can go 4.185?

Rays is 4.09 I believe. That is about it on those. Hopefully these new ones AT LEAST have 6.4 sleeves that start at 4.09.

Nothing if your name is Steff lol! Cams are expensive and timing chains are subject IMO. They need the VVT feature locked out or deleted for the hot rodder. Quality of them is good to go though, just more of headache and $$$ for no advantage other than availability.

I read the 6.4 blocks have better cooling and bigger bore capabilitys than the 6.1 blocks, is this true? if so why not run the 6.4 block even though they are vvt?

I have a 6.4 short block I am building and from what I gather the Hellcat has nearly identical timing chains as the 6.4. I remember there being problems with the 5.7 but has anyone heard of or seen a problem with the 6.4 chain?

A.C. Nutter has come up with a solution for us hot rodders that want to use a pre-vvt cam in a vvt block. Gets rid of it and also uses a different timing chain from what I understand.

Honestly just sit tight and see what this new 6.1 block turns out to be. The aftermarket support sucks for the Gen III market as a whole but it really sucks more for the VVT blocks. Only failure I have seen is a guy with a Procharged 426" 6.4 do a REALLY long, like 10 minutes, WOT run and it seized the middle cam bearing, sheared the cam dowel and the rest is history. But the chain was fine lol! Im not even sure if the cam bearings are even serviceable on the VVT blocks.

Man I hope your right!
What would be the purpose of recasting an old block? Warranty? They could of kept the ones they sold to INDY for dirt cheap!
I'm hoping they added some meat to the thing

I will hold out to see what mopar-wholesale sells them for but i'm going to get one. Ever since 340Rick posted pictures of his pistons, I wanted to build another one. Ill save the Apache heads for the next build

Yes, mine is now 4.09 but I have some cylindet walls under .1
