Wondering if they were always on the tag as an axle package or was it possible to get them without the code

They will be coded on the tag since it was a package and had an impact on the body in white (26" radiator support).

All though the 26 inch radiator is coded the 3.91 would not be or at least not on my AAR or any other I've seen for that matter.

AARs and TAs only came with 3.55 or 3.91 axle ratios and both those gears required the 26" radiator. You only find the gear ratio for those two cars on the original paperwork (BS, window sticker, etc). Otherwise, the code A31 or A36 will be coded on the tag.

My a66 challenger currently has 3.23s in it.. LA built car, so no BS just wondering if there were any lower gear options for it that weren't coded as an axle package

Your car would have had the 3.23 gears, if there is no axle pkg coded on the tag.

Yeah with everything else as original as it is on this car I figured the 3.23s were the standard gear, just wondering about any leeway from the factory without tag codes

Be happy that on the E body the gear change was an Axle package and there was a code.

On the 69 A bodies (also Hamtramack built) built with a performance axle ratio there was no code so the only way to know is with factory/dealer documentation.

Dont 68 A-body fender tags have the numbers under the AX ?
Number under A indicating ratio, 4= 3:23 in this case,
8 under X = suregrip.
6 would be 3:55
7 would be 3:91
9 would be 4:10
..or so I always thought

Yup, and that's because the A-body kept the same radiator support regardless of the gears. I believe it was the same way for the '70-71 A-bodies as well.

You are correct , I forgot about the changed layout ... should have just kept to what I know ... 69 ...
