10" Rear Wheels in a '63? #1712213

I'm having my '63 Dodge mini-tubbed in January and want 10" wheels in the rear. I want them to look as deep dish as possible and looking for opinions on offset. I haven't ordered the rear end from Strange yet until the shop gives me the specs, but basically looking for what everyone is running. I'm probably going with a Billet Specialties Comp 5 on all four wheels. Any pics or opinions would be great! Thanks.

I run a 12" wheel with a 4" back spacing so you see
a 8" dish

Mine '63 has stock tubs and 15x8 Wheel Vintiques with 4 1/2" backspace. Rearend is out of a 68-70 Charger. The wheels are perfectly centered in the wheelwell. 275/60/15 tires

I guess I don't understand the question. You say you want a 10" wheel with as much dish as possible. Since you are doing a custom rear, that's exactly what you should order and then make the rear fit the wheels. Get what you want

As Monte said,get the wheels and tires that you want and that fit your wheelwell,set them in the wells then measure the rearend length.Don't forget to allow for the thickness of the brake componants.You may also want to consider centering the wheel in the opening for front and back clearences and make the adjustment in your suspension attaching points.

Depending on tire sizing, I'm not sure you'll need to mini tub if you get the right offset wheel.

I can't speak to a '63, but my '62 has 10" wide wheels on it. The front spring hanger is just pushed over to the framerail. Fits a 275/60 drag radial on the 10" wheel SNUG!

I actually have a spacer, because it was a TOUCH on the tight side.

The 15x10" will fit without the mini-tub, depending on the tire you are looking to put on it. I have 15x10" with 5 3/4" b.S. and 9x30 slicks. No mini-tub, I just moved the springs inboard, and ordered the S60 to fit. You need the mini-tub for anything wider than 9" slick, or 275's on a 10" wheel.

Some of you guys are still talking about backspacing. That does NOT matter if you are doing a custom width rear. A 10" wheel is a 10" wheel. It fits or it doesn't. So order what you want and fit the rear.

Now, that said, you can get a 10" wheel on a 63 without mini-tubs. If I mini-tubbed it, I would put a 12" wheel on it, depending on the tire you want to use

Backspacing is definitely important.

If the tires fit tight against the outside of the wheel well, wheels with minimal backspacing are much easier to remove.

In other words, when in doubt, order wheels with minimal backspacing, center the wheels in the tubs then spec the rearend to fit.

My Cuda has 16 inch wide wheels with 3.5 back spacing, there still a pain to take on and off. I think I will shorten up the wheel studs some to make it easier to get them on and off

1963 Plymouth or Dodge B-bodies will fit 10" wheels as said above. The Stock Eliminator guys all run 15 x 10. I believe the backspacing on a stock, B-Body rear would need to be 5", not the 5 3/4" specified above. Check your application first. In order to see what they look like, go to the Cal Tracs website. In their Mopar section, they have photos of stockers with this wheel, running the 29 x 9 x 15" tires. TD

When doing a custom length rear, I run the shallowest back spacing I can get. A 10" wheel is a 10" wheel and weighs the same. However, if you run a 3" backspace wheel vs a 6" backspace wheel, that is 3" of axle housing and axle length you can remove from either side of the car, ie a good bit lighter. PLUS deep wheels just look way better, to me at least. As already touched on, that generally makes the wheels easier to get on and off as well. You should also use a thinned lug nut and have no threads past the end of that nut. Exposed threads are dead weight, plus get in the way when changing wheels.

A shorter housing and axle is way lighter
and I like the deep wheels also
