Since turbos like load
What would be a better Starting Line Ratio?

rear gear 3.23 or 3.55
275 et pro tire on 10" rim

Trans
A-999
A-500

727
518

trying to decide which Trans/rear gear comb to run
street cruiser/ weekend track car

engine is .040 over 340,
9.64 compression
ported edenbrock

No cam yet
Watching >>>>Dizuster<<< turbo kit post

Was thinking about this
While
prepping the floor/ trans cross member for a 518 with trans shield.
Only cause it needs the most clearance to fit.

thanks
Howard

If you are looking to make big power go with a 3.23 rear with either trans to get your slr down. Then tune with a convertor to get your power where it needs to be. Its easier to manage a looser convertor then a tight one on small tires.

my buddy runs low 8's at 170 w/ 3.55 gear and a turbo 400 trans... that said I'd think it al depends on your converter and what you are looking to do with the car.

Since its a cruiser I would run the 518.. you get the
OD with it(but loose the input and pump gears for the
normal 727 input and pump gears... either rear gear
should load the engine enough.. but the 3.23 would
really drop the rpms in OD when cruising... figure
out the rpm that you want to cross the line and use
the best rear gear

thanks,for the replies,

We are wanting to build a dual purpose vehicle.
cruise/track

mild turbo engine, easier on parts (?)
VS radical stroker
setting off car alarms every where to goes.

yeah now a days boost is the way to go. no big lumpy bumpy cams, big cubic inches, stall and non-fun highway gears. When this engine goes, the next build will be boosted for sure.

Slr is for a race car and not a street crusier. Use what ever gears that will make you happy on the street. Maybe a 3.55 to get on boost easier when crusing.

Driving the Race car to the track..

this car isn't a daily driver, just a "Fun" car

Need the SLR when we get there

I don't know what this car weighs... but I have lots of broken 727, 8 3/4" pictures I could show you when I only had home ported iron heads, non-pro 275's, and a REAL small cam...

Eddy's, a good cam, and pro's are only going to make more power/be harder on the driveline.

Just based on that, I wouldn't bother even trying the 904. And I also would think REAL hard about putting a Dana in the car.

Just depends what kind of ET you're looking for though.

being dual purpose

on the topic of a dana

what about 4.10 dana gear running with A-518
(because that's the gear in the White Dart now.
1350 joints)
have a 3.54 gear but would have to narrow a housing.
don't want to change out the 4.10 vs 3.54

have a 518 (diesel) out of a pulling truck with good parts in it
5 pinion, hardened input shaft, billet drum, etc
could swap into the A-518??????

would the 3.54 be a better ratio ?
ET pros are 26" tall

Thanks

I know very little about setting up a turbo application
trying to learn.

The valve body in a diesel trans is all wrong for
a gas engine

Mike
was only going to rob the good parts> pinion gears, drums, input shaft since the case is cracked anyway, where it bolts to the adapter plate on the diesel
use the valve body and governor in the (Car)trans

Pro is 28 inches tall. Comes in one size 275/60/15 or 28/10.

You'll be well out of 3rd gear before the end of the track with the 4.10. I wouldn't want to run that much torque through the 518 OD unit. Not to mention they are not real effecient.

3.55 Dana would be your best option with the good Trans parts in a 727.

3.55 gears are all over the place. If you're on a budget get a used one and swap it in. That's what mine has in it.
