I've got an 8 3/4 from an older pick-up. I'm thinking about having Dutchman narrow it to fit my A body. Is there enough length on the axles to do this?

We did the same thing on one of my scamps that
had the tiny rear end in it.
The truck had the same spline but was a thicker
shaft. We put a cheep spool in it we found at
a swap meet and a rebuilt 360 in it, and pounded
the pi$$ out of it for a while. Full time posi
is fun with little 70R/14 tires roasting for
a couple hundred ft.

We used shortened truck axles in my dads Duster back when we ran the iron head 360. Glad we found this before something bad happened.

depends on if the axle is a good canadate for shortening

some are tapperd down and are not thick enuff to respline

but most truck and c-body axle are good canadates for a re spline

measure the axle to see if it tappers down in the area that the a-body axle will be

29" IIRC

and some truck axles are the 5 on 5.5 wbp also

moser did some for me a long time ago about 65$

seems they narrowed the housing in that same price range too

give them a call

I got a-body axles with green bearings,large brake offset.5 on 4.5 wbp 299$ for a set

got an a body housing in 2000 for 225$

try doctor diff here on the board too

Dutchman wants $90 to shorten the pair of axles, $120 to narrow the housing, and another $120 to remove and install new spring perches.

moser charged me 25$ for the perches and 25$ labor to weld them ona housing

I got an old magazine with a moser add

65$ for respline or narrowing a housing

thats why I used them

great price great workmanship 5 day turn around

last one I did with moser it was 225$ for an A-body housing

50$ for perches/labor

299$ for axles with greens and large brake offset

plus shipping

560-570$ IIRC

saved my stuff and just had them send it all to me from there...5 days and fit right the first time

still hammering it 8 yrs later

try them and doctor diff

good luck

hook your tape on the outside of the flange & measure out to where it starts to taper, if you have at least 28" you're good. I think it's $110 for the housing & $110 for the axles & $55 for the perches(plus new perches) plus the shipping to Portland Indiana & back. Be sure & tell them to relocate the perches on the other side of the(truck) housing(I forgot to do that & they didn't catch it either ) & they will relocate them at 43.125" & factory was 43.02". that amt I wouldn't think it'd be a problem but I wanted mine factory perfect so I gave them that dimention rather than telling them "to A body dimentions" .

The pic below illustrates the acceptable/unacceptable limits for an A body axle.

WHAT ARE THE ODDS THAT 2 DIFFERENT REAR END BUILDERS WOULD BE LOCATED IN CITIES OF THE SAME NAME,BUT LOCATED 2/3 OF THE COUNTRY APART FROM EACH OTHER? DOC, IF I WANT TO USE AFTERMARKET AXLES, CAN I STILL USE THE BACKING PLATES AND DRUMS FROM MY REAREND?

another option is a b body axle....it will work...but wheel offset is critical

If the aftermarket axles are configured with the B, C, E body flange dimension (most are) the A body brake drums, shoes and backing plates won't work.

not very high. If your having the truck BBP 8&3/4 narrowed for your A body the drums/backing plates/shoes etc will still fit OK, they are just shortening the axles/housing inward to fit your A body. I would check the wheels/tires you intend to use as that MAY slightly change how much you want them to narrow it. Measure twice cut once is good advice.

Stock A-body housings designed for 5 x 4" axles measures 52 5/8" wide. A 52" wide housing will yield an identical assembly width when used with standard 5 x 4 1/2" axle flange stand out.

Unfortunately, the stock housing ends get a little close to the perches, so I usually make (5 x 4 1/2" pattern) A-body housings 52 1/4" wide.

Doc is that with the perches at 43 or 43.125.
