There are 2 bolts holding my ignition box to the firewall. One of the holes is stripped as the bolt wont tighten and it needs to be tight for a good ground, how can i fix this being the firewall metal is so thin..?

I use nut inserts. Various sizes available. Work great for holding a mirror on the body of a car. McMaster-Carr

Google nut inserts as there are YouTube vidoes on how to install them.

the next size up Metric bolt might do it, jamb it in there & with that, slightly file the hole (as needed). EDIT better/more professional might be to run a metric tap in there & get it dead on, wouldn't take but a minute or two

check your local hardware store also. anymore, most have an "automotive" bin in their "nutz-n-boltz" section. if they do, most have nutserts and a cheapy installation tool for them as well as oversize factory style screws.

The same thing happened to me. The original screws have a finer thread then a regular sheet metal screw. I was able to put a nut on the back side and get it nice and tight. This was on a Challenger so I could reach right in through the cowl vent hole.

Same here, ammeter was jumping all over the place. Once I figured out it was the loose bolts, nut on the other side fixed it.

For stripped screws in sheet metal, put a bent piece of wire in the hole and re-try the screw. You can also use a piece of nylon fishing line.

I have used .030 Mig wire single or doubled if it is really too big, works fine and helps the electrical contact.

cut an inch of wire, make a V out of it, put one end in the hole and the other outside the hole. That takes up the extra room.

Another solution is a bigger screw. The AP store will likely have hex head body fastener, about the same size you have, with 1/4" threads.

Is this in the firewall of the pictured dirt track car?Move it sideways or up/down and drill 2 brand new holes.Or just run the screws in and let them make the new holes.

No, not in the dirt car, its in my dart, dont really want to drill any holes in her anywhere..

The original bolt size was likely close to 1/4" x 20 thread count. I would probably go for that size, and use new bolts when installing the box. Gene

well the rivet nuts were a COMPLETE FAILURE!! Now i got a mess from hell. Dont see how they are of any use. I installed the damn things and went to tighten the bolts up when mounting the ECU and the stupid rivet nuts turned! They refuse to grip the sheet metal enough to tighten much at all. I had to grab them with a pair of dykes and rip them out of the firewall. Now i am screwed.

That sucks , there are better choices than the one you ended up using , but I'm sure that was all you could find in a local hardware store , but you should have drilled it out and not ripped it out , but I understand the frustration.

well, i managed to play around with the holes in the firewall and got them beat down to where they would fit another rivet nut but whats the point if they dont work..I dont see how or why anyone uses these since you cant go past finger tight...? I didnt buy the rivet nuts or the tool. A guy at work had it. When i installed the first one it spun real easy, so i re-set it with the tool with a lot more pressure and snapped the handle in half on his tool and had to buy him a new one and it was not cheap! It was a marson thread setter brand. Like i said, if i put that much pressure to break the damn tool and the rivet nut cant grab any better than that, then why do people use them..?

Bummer about your experience. I've used rivnuts in mopar EOM sheetmetal with zero probs.

Rivnuts are pretty common in OE applications. Mercedes and Porsche use them all over their cars. They hold on all kinds of body panels and electrical components.

Maybe your installation wasn't tight enough due to a poor quality nut or poor installation. It's easy to get 'em off a bit if you're using a nut and bolt for installation.
