Sometimes turning the engine and pulling with retaining ring pliers works

I've also used a screwdriver to walk it above the cam gear and then a 90* pick to lift it up further and out.

Make a hangmans' noose out of real thin wire, thin like parts tag wire & drop it down & hook it under the gear then get the gear loose & starting to come up with (2) L pics or heavier coat hangar wire with an L bend in the end(s) then with it free hold it up a hair with the parts tag wire & remove the (2) L wires & pull it up thru the tight opening the rest of the way with the parts tag wire

Do you have a long pair of needle nose pliers , or a pair of needle nose visegrips ? Remember to turn it in the opposite direction of normal rotation while pulling up.

Ive use 2 of the same screwdrivers (I have craftsman) after you spin it out of the threads stick them in the slot next to each other then squeeze the handles together and pull up. Works every time for me

Turn it with a screw driver first to drive it over the cam, then take a pair of regular pliers, open them up to the wider setting (handles closer together), stick one half in the drive slot and the other on the outside. Squeeze and pull. Works like a charm.

Now I need to pin those needles, got to feel that heat

I have some long reach pliers that will reach the gear. My pair came from SnapOn but you might be able to find similiar pliers from Sears or other tool vendor.

Screwdriver to turn above the cam then I use a big ass magnet. This is super easy and works most every time.

I bought a set of surgical forcips from a tooling vendor at a car show, about 8" long. They work for me.

I've used virtually every method described, all work OK. The only problem can be on a new build where the bushing wasn't burnished to size with the factory too, then the gear can be almost stuck.
