So, I wasn't very happy with ATF the last time around in this Texas heat.

I'm stuck between the Amsoil MTL and the Penzoil Synchromesh. I'm also open to any suggestions.

How do these transmissions run with synthetic fluid?

Make sure you get GL4, not a GL5. Many GL5s will say it exceeds GL4, but many will be harsh on synchros. Brad Penn makes a GL4 in 80W90 that is reasonably priced on Amazon.

I wouldn't run ATF in one fwiw. Yes the FSM says you can do it, if you live in EXTREME cold, and it says to get rid of it once temps rise.

The 833 loves synthetic fluid, my personal choice is Redline 75/90 NS.

I was hoping for that. I'd really like to use Amsoil.

Skip the ATF.
Use a synthetic gear oil.
Look for a GL-6. They are out there. Expensive but worth it.

I used 80-90w gear oil in Texas, worked great.

Per the factory, the 833 likes heavier oil in the heat. ATF and Sycromesh are too thin. I agree the Redline "MT90" would be a good choice. Regular 90 wt would probably do OK also if you could find it in GL4.

Why not just use gear oil like they came. I have run it in them for years with no ill effect and I just did 4400 miles in the AAR with gear oil.

I've been rowing gears for over 30 years and I only use 90 wt. Gear oil in my boxes with syncronizers and Redline shock proof synthetic in my race non synchronized boxes. In some cold weather climates straight 30 weight non detergent oil will work

Plenty of past threads on this topic.

I use Passon Performance Gear lube. (570-401-8949) Just stocked up and 5QTs was around $60.00 shipped to my door.

I tried the Synchromesh and did not like it.

I tried the Amsoil and I did not like it and removed it. It leaked more and it clunked going into gears.

Never used anything else and never had a problem. On another note,do you think vendors as mentioned above actually make gear oil ? It's a relabeled product from a major source like a good amount of what you buy these days.

Castrol Syncromesh in a friends car just recently. It's the only GL-4 stuff I could find locally, in his price range , no issues.
