I have an 86 Ram with power windows and power door locks. Yesterday, I put both windows down and drove around. When I went to put them up, neither one would go up.

I checked the fuse box and there was a metal fuse that was in the spot for the windows and door locks. Upon touching it, the metal fuse was hot to the touch.

I pulled it out and I could barely hold onto it. I didnt have another of that type of fuse, so I tried a few 30 amp fuses and they blew immediately and sparked.

I took both door panels off and there was no current to either motor when I plugged the metal fuse back in. I disconnected the connector for the power window motors and got a hot wire from the battery and touched the metal spade connectors. Nothing...

I wound up removing both window motors and again tried to get them to run by using the battery of the truck - nothing.

I used my continuity tester on both motors and I got an audible beep...wierd since they arent working when you put 12 volts to either window motor.

Any ideas? Could the short have ruined both window motors. Anyone ever experience something like this? I have no idea where to look to find this short...

Thanks!

You do know that you need to feed the two terminals (12v plus and minus) on the motor to get them to run, right?

There are two terminals on the connector-12 volts to one makes the motor spin one way - up and then 12 volts to the other spade spins the motor the other way sending the window down...

Have you tried hooking both hot and ground to the motor terminals to go one way and then reversing the hook up to go the other? I believe the switch reverses polarity to make the motors go up and down.

I'll try that...for some reason I thought I did, but I can't remember if i hooked both a hot and ground to each spade...my mind has been in a daze over the past week since my mom has been hospitalized..

I may not have tried that though since I figured the motor itself was grounded out by being bolted to the door

The motor is not the ground. The switches reverse the ground to the connectors.Id say you have a short in the wiring thru the post to the doors if the motors are good. You can un hook both and then put the breaker back in and see if it gets hot.If it does its a switch or the wiring.Rocky
