Want to send another “Good Guy” out to Bob George!! Took the Duster to Quaker today to make some shake down runs. Just getting broke in, only had a few pulls on it. 1st pass it went 10.46 @ 123 60’ 1.41. Not bad for all new stuff, no bangs or misses whatsoever. Track wasn’t that good today, prep wasn’t up to par. 2nd pass it went 10.44 @ 124 60’ 1.38. Picking up, but still a bit off. Both passes it was black out of the pipes, seems a bit rich. Timing was still at 37 degrees as well. Motor is still a bit tight, but sounded great going thru the passes. Still want to remind everyone to remember Bob George for you engine parts & work. Was so patient w/me as I changed things a 100 times. Sorry to have to miss Norwalk, but all funds went into getting the car back together. Any input from others w/Indy 440-1 parts would be great. Thanks, Ken Michalik

Try pulling the timing back to 35 degrees. Also if you do not already have them try a set of Champion C57CX or Autolite AR3932 plugs.

Several tunning issues i see The blowing out black smoke can be jets but bet my money on high floats and way to much fuel pressure . 7.5-8# of fuel pressure to the bowls is enough! Any more and the needle n seats blow over down track Plugs have very little to do with this unless the amount of voltage is very low going to the coil thus low fire to plug doubtfull Shift points i could see in the area of 65-6800 Timing at 37 maybe ok I would be in the 34-36 range More worried about his converter tho MPH way off but if its blowing out black mph will be way off Be helpfull to know gears and what rpm he is going thru traps at 3100# car 474 should be 9.80-9.90 car 130 plus When he is done

I have fully ported 440-1 heads, 528 cubes, 7100 best shift point with a TF. I am betting you will need to buzz yours a bit more to get the most out of it, that is if the cam/springs will cooperate.

The plugs make more different than you would think in these type Indy headed engines. But more than likely won't cure the to rich problem, but best to get the right plugs in it before making changes that you may not need.Pulling the timing down will help the mph.I'm sure you already have a good dist.,coil & MSD box they are a must for engines like these.I have run Indy headed engines since a teenager when they 1st come out in the early 80's. Make sure you have a good scoop or cowl hood where the carb. can pull enough air. When you have all these base's covered then jet the carb. like Mr_P suggested!Take your time & make 1 change at a time till you get it perfect and you won't regret it.
PS you can go on a T&T night and make several changes 1 at a time in one night!Good Luck

Ken, what heads did you run before and what ET did they run? If your 440-1 heads are not ported they may not live up to your expectations until you get them ported. My Dart ran 9.80's with -1's but I had 500 inches and a roller cam, but the cam was for pump gas so it bled off alot of compression. They only flowed 320 at 700 also, so I was leaving alot on the table there as the newer ported -1's flow much better.
