My brother just bought this little truck which is essentially like new minus the black spray bomb over what appears to be great original paint. Any ideas on how to get the spray bomb off without hurting the original. He tried a small area with some paint thinner and it did not really touch the spray bomb paint which kind of surprised me. I am guessing it is not possible but thought I would check for any ideas for him.

Not easy.... Might try wet sanding then buff once the old paint is exposed. Basically like you would cut and buff new clearcoat. I have never tried anything like that but I would think it would work. Same principle, taking off the top layer. Very labor intensive though. There must be a reason hey painted it. My guess is the paint has bad areas under the black.

That's King Weenie to you!

I'd start with steam pressure washer, probably could get 100% off if you have the time and patience. It would not hurt the original paint at all if your careful. I've done this before.

Ricks restoration said to use a chemical stripper, it only removes one layer at a time

It will only remove one layer as long as there is not a scratch or other imperfection that will allow the stripper to get down into/below the original finish. Then you will start to lift the original finish and defeat your purpose.

I'm with the other guys, that there has to be a reason that it was spray bombed in the first place. Check the front clip and make sure it is the same color as the rest of the truck. There might be a swapped out 1/4 panel or hood?

Its funny, if he spray bombed it he probably wouldn't be able to keep it on there

So this is pretty funny. My brother messed around with the paint a little bit today and finally decided to bite the bullet and just repaint it back to the factory Burnt Orange. While he was at the paint shop the employee said "hey I know that truck. The kid that use to own that painted it black so that it would make it harder to find it to repo it!!!" Apparently didn't work.

I had a lot of success with old oven cleaner, I'd spray on let sit a few minutes then power wash.
90% of the time the paint would wash off leaving factory finish.
Never did that large of a project, and not sure what oven cleaner is like in your area, it has changed here do to environmental laws.

This post is cracking me up. Talk about timing. I just bought a Dakota R/T that was originally Solar Yellow. It LOOKS like he shot one coat of a metallic black, maybe a two stage paint, with no clear coat. It scratches if you sneeze. The small bare spots around the trim look like no sanding was performed. I'm contemplating giving it the power washing treatment but I'll wait till I can afford to have it repainted. Otherwise I'll be driving a Dalmatian for a while.

My truck has a salvage title, so who knows what I will find under the paint...

I’m listening.

Just do a small area and keep an eye on it, don't go off and watch some ball game.

Well just to complete the post. We had to strip every inch of the black off the truck and repaint the whole truck. Custom fit a challenger hood skin on the truck and shot it out this weekend. Still some assembly needed.
