helping a friend install a performer intake on a 440.according to the instructions u use the valley pan and then add edelbrock gaskets on the intake side.do u guys use sealant on the front and back of the valley pan?do this sound right.thanks

You swapping an RPM onto this 440? Standard performer isn't worth bothering with, unless it's a completely stock engine, IMO.

This is the only way I got mine to finally seal. I didn't put silicone on the bolts but in my defense I didn't know any better. No leaks though.
I am running a performer RPM on aluminum Mopar heads.

I had lots of trouble with mine, what worked for me too , was just the valley pan, no gaskets. This was with stock casting heads,one of the last sets Herb McCandless sold out of his shop I got years ago, using a performer RPM. Motor was built by Matt Hensley, it has been a great motor. Could run faster, but can't get it to hook with the 4.10 Dana and that's using first gen BFG 325X50 15's drag radials.

Before you get too far with the install, make sure the intake and head mating surfaces are machined to matching angles. You can tell by setting the intake on the clean heads with no gaskets, make sure its setting as evenly on the heads as possible and running a feeler gauge around all of the ports. If anything over about .005 will fit between intake & head, you'll have to get the manifold angle corrected or get real creative with paper gaskets. I ran into this on my 383 & had vacuum leaks no matter what I did. Had a local machinist square it up, & it seals great with super thin paper gaskets on each side of steel tray. The 383 had stock heads, interestingly enough, my 500 motor with edelbrock heads fit perfect right out of the box.
