I have a 67 440 in my 65 Coronet that had a crack between the freeze plugs, I had it stitch welded like 5 yrs ago and never had a problem. My ? Is how reliable is this procedure?as I may be selling the car and just want to inform the buyer about it without scaring the person away.

Cast iron is tricky so in general it varies. 5 years without crack suggests it is a good repair... that's the most re-assuring part.

Do you mean you had it stich repair, AKA lock and stitch repairs on cast iron? Or is it welded electrically? If either and it hasn't leak in five years I wouldn't worry much about it leaking, let your conscions (SP?), morals, be your guide

Mentioning the repair was made 5 years ago is the honorable thing to do, and as others have mentioned, says a lot about you and the repair.

Reality check, that half the population is smarter then 50% of the people and it's a constantly contested fact.

And you can always take the serious Buyer for a little ride, get it up to temperature, park it and show them it's not leaking. Can even use a mirror if need be.

I am really curious why it's not leaking between welds......either that crack doesn't go all the way into the water jacket, or there isn't water in that spot at all: it's solid iron.

Had a hairline crack and it was wet with coolant(very minor)but leaking none the less.
Pulled the motor and sent down to my machinist and he repaired it, told me it was stitch welded and like I said hasent had a problem since. Is this a common problem on BB Mopars? Would anybody buy a car that had this repair done?

I've had many cast iron motor parts repaired, both with cast iron welding and stitch(and lock) repairs The BB 906 heads had a bad history of cracking under the center exhaust ports, especially if left to freeze with water in them I know several BB Mopar racers who would drain the block and radiator and not use anti freeze in the winter to flush the water out of the heads in the high Desert of SO CA, both had heads frozen and broke the next year Same thing on inboard boats up there and motor homes plumbing

Peened, finished and polished. The whole chamber will be polished once I finish the seat installation and profile cutting.

Tough one.

A really rare, must-be-saved-at-all-costs engine, I suppose. Welds can be re-done and re-done until it finally holds. Stock hp level makes it passable but it's not a candidate for someone wanting more.

In your case, 400 engines are still out there and can be used to build a pretty mean stroker on a budget. Your car gives someone something to drive for a while.

If the body and interior of your car is in really nice shape, I would buy it: an engine can be had anywhere from a $150.00 318 that runs to a decent, standard $2000.00 big block. Bodywork, there is no such easy way out, we might as well say it starts at $10,000.00 and just goes up from there.......

I always look at a straight, accident-free car. Engines are cheap.

Who knows, maybe one day the "numbers matching" Owner for that 440 will hunt you down and pay big bucks for it!
