I have been using Rotella but looking at maybe changing to a synthetic what are some recommended
brands with or without an additive.
Thanks,
Mike

+1
for my dd it is amsoil, for the old car and wifes mobil 1.
if mobil 1 made it for my dd I would probably use that too, but that is only because amsoil was a bit more.

My local engine expert told me to keep using Rotella T 15W40 or Valvoline VR1 40 in my 440.

Whenever it goes on sale at O'Reilys I pick some up and that helps to keep the costs down.

I run Brad Penn for engine break in, same for when breaking in a new cam. Valvoline VR1 for regular use. Mopar filters, WIX or Napa Gold series. Sometimes I use a FRAM HP1.
The daily rig is a 2007 Ram. I run whatever 5w20 is on sale but always a name brand oil along with a WIX or Napa filter.

Brad Penn

Break-in for a new build then change to the 10w40 or 20w50 depending on which motor I have it in.

Pennzoil 20w50 racing prior to using Brad Penn.

I like and use straight non synthetic Valvoline 5W20WT in all my cars My 2006 Ram 3500 CTD gets either Rotella or Delo 400 15w40WT , diesel oil in the diesel motors I have used some of the new Pennzoil 25W50 WT in several high output race motors, it is very slippery when rubbed between the fingers and thumb I keep in mind that oil does two things in motors, it cools and lubricates If my motors don't show any sign of lubricant failures on inspections I stick with what works Synthetic oils have come a long way in the last 15 yrs, maybe some day I will try them again on some of my own stuff The last synthetic oils I used was in my airplane, Mobil AV 1, it made that motor sludge up in less than 400 hrs of use It was removed from the market after a massive class action lawsuit settlement , I didn't get in on that I've heard conflicting reports on diesel oil frothing in gas motors at the upper RPM, above 3000 RPM

Depends on what cam is in the engine. Flat tappet cam engines need Rotella T or some other diesel oil w the zinc addives...Roller cam engines can use any modern oil....

Take care,

Rotella T 15W40 in the '70E BB. Rotella synthetic 5w40 in the '98 DOHC Neon. Slipper follower cams (Neon) like zinc also. This example needs to start in really cold weather. Over 150k on the Neon and runs great/uses little oil.

I have used Pennzoil non synthetic for more than 30 years.I don't think that synthetic is worth the money. 6 years ago a friend bought a new Ram 4x4 and from day one he only used high test gas and synthetic oil. With less than 100K miles he lost oil pressure. He pulled the oil pan and the sludge was almost thick as peanut butter and 2 inches deep, never had that problem with Pennzoil.

I run whatever is on sale! I'm a bit more selective on filters, but not much. Everything I own has over 100K miles, the vehicles will fall apart long before any motor oil problems will take them out.

When I was young, I cared more about things like oil, but now that I've become older, I sound like my dad. The only motor failures I've ever had that could have been a result of an oil problem, also had high rpm conditions. The high rpm was always present with the motor failures. Hard to blame the oil when the tach read 7,000+ on a basically stock motor. Gene

Old cars, rotella and ZDDP plus.
New cars, whatever is on sale with wix filters. I change it too often so I am going back to dino oil, not worth synthetic.
