How the hell do I get the hood springs off the hinges? Got a fiberglass hood and need some low tension springs but can't seem to get the old ones off the post. Please help...

you open the hood to expand the spring.
then stuff cardboard into the gaps.
close the hood a bit and the spring stays expanded.

you can use coins too, but I like the extra depth of cardboard.

or just anything not compressable.

same concept but more work.
you will need shims instead. so they are tapered and lets you wedge them between the coils.
go to home depot and pick up a couple of packs of wooden shims. just start working them between the coils to pull it apart.

I think Andrew is thinking of coil springs.

If the hinge is off the car already, clamp it in a vice. Using a small pry bar (or other suitable tool), pry the hooked end of the spring off the pin. Just be careful.

The pin at the center of the spring is peened to keep it from sliding off. Using a small cutoff wheel, you can cut/grind the the peen until the spring will slide off the pin. It won't take much.

After the new spring is installed I just put a little spot weld (blob) where the peening was removed on the pin to keep the spring from sliding off.

Then, it's pretty easy to grab the hook end of the spring with some channel-lock pliers and hook it over the outer pin.

This is how you do it. Clearence the center peen first, then clamp the spring and remove the hook part and slide it all up and out.

Thanks! grinding off the center peen was the part I wasnt sure of . I am getting some low tension springs for my new fiberglass hood setup. Love the blown duster! I am building a blown dart currently.

Here's what I do.Clamp the hinge in a vice, very tight, and use the open end of a crescent wrench to hook on the spring hook.Pull it off, very easy,.You can also put it back on this way after restoration.
