69 B body 4 speed. Shaft that steering wheel attaches to moves in and out of column. What's broken?

There are plastic shear "rivets" that allow the steering wheel shaft to collapse in the event of a collision, the rivets have sheared off.

Some popular fixes involve replacing the rivets with hardware store plastic screws or bonding the upper/lower shafts together.

The factory offered a kit to bond the shafts together but any that might be left will have the adhesive dried up by now.

So the fix is to remove the shaft, take everything apart, replace the plastic rivets, re assemble and reinstall

when i converted mine to manual steering i set the length then put 2 small tack welds where the 2 segments join, they will fail in a collision allowing the column to collapse.

First the bearing is held to the steering shaft by a c clip, the bearing is held to the steering column by a bearing retainer, and the bearing retainer is screwed the column shaft by j type bolts.

If you pull the steering wheel you will see some small nuts attached to a bolt. Position these so the steering shaft doesn't move and tighten up the nuts.

Never pull on a steering column when moving a car. DAMHIK!
