Now that I have your attention; No, it didn`t blow YET but was curious about which let`s go first...........gears or axles. I`m assuming gears cos my 30 spline Dutchman`s look damn near perfect after many years of street/strip bashing and rerely hear about 8 3/4 axles lettin go it`s usually the cap/gears. Hopefully I have two more races lined up this Sunday but don`t want to be TOO confident just yet just because the axles look great................

After I broke the suregrip running mid 11s, I put in a spool and 35 spline Moser axles. Broke the ring and pinion when I got into the mid 10s.

A good axle is a good axle...doesn't make much difference what rear it's in.

The two that I have seen break. Pushed the caps back. One was a stick car the other was a b_body auto.

Once you have good axles and a spool in most 8 3/4 the left side(drivers side) bearing cap becomes the weak link Now is the time to address that before it breaks and wrecks the ring and pinion I have two in stock, call me Dom

But if you do it have it done right. The new caps have to be properly fitted, and the lash screwed back to where it needs to be.

Ive seen where people have had rears stay together as was, but blow up after changes to strengthen it because of improper fitment of the new caps. Mostly, the caps ending up to loose allowing lash to get sloppy and push out the retainers and boom.

You didn't ask and probably don't want to hear it, but.....

Why keep pushing your luck with that poor 8-3/4?

You know you are going to kill the thing. Sooner rather than later and probably with catastrophic results.
Sell it now while it is still in one piece and worth something.

A basic, cut down Dana with a spool isn't that expensive if you reuse your brakes.

Sutton Engineering is a good source reasonably close to you.
- Complete Dana 60 with a Moser spool and 35-spline axles = $1400.00

I broke the cap first in my Demon. I put a billet cap on it then it broke the gear.

My feelings are that you are not going to hit that gear hard enough on the street. We had 30 spline Dutchman's in the Duster and were twisting splines pretty hard. All track time, mostly t-brake launches. Switched to a D-60 before we really did some damage.

As has been covered MANY times, good axles, caps, backbraces and all that other stuff will NOT fix the weakness of the case that LETS the ring and pinion push apart and kills gears. Sure the cap helps, but think WHY. The pinion is trying to roll the ring gear out of the housing and breaks the stock cap. So you put a GOOD cap on it and now the case has to try and shoulder all the deflection and it can't. You CAN'T fix that or patch it up.........BUT, the car may NEVER hook hard enough on the street to break it, but then it may break on the next hit. THAT is the problem. You KNOW it's coming, just never know when. Probably would have already broken it if you ran at the track a lot. Likely be wise to start buying up some Dana stuff now if that is what you want.

Monte

Dom, pushing the envelope is fine sometimes. A buddy of mine had his 8 3/4 in an A body cough its guts at about 10.80's. It sucked because it also caused a ton of transmission damage when it let go.
There's no generic GM's or Nissans worth a new rear and a trans....
