Ok, we've had threads on 1971 and earlier 340 engines but things changed a lot after 1971.

Later small blocks are very poorly documented and we need to document what originals remain for the future.

Let's see some pics of ORIGINAL details from your engines (no restored or repainted engine pics please, factory paint only). Any details you have would be great, paint details especially, please post as much info about the cars they came from as possible.

Don't forget to leave plenty of casting sand in the coolant passages!

Had more than one '71 block that would overheat due to a clogged radiator because of this...

No, sorry. Closest thing is part of the drivers side motor mount thru bolt in the "drivers front" picture.

It looks like it's located under the alternator. If so, is there a threaded nipple out of the fuel pump or does the metal fuel line come out of the fuel pump and then the fuel filter is inserted in the cut line using 2 short pieces of fuel hose?

Right on top on the passenger side front. Steel line threads into the fuel pump, runs up behind the alternator to a short rubber hose, to the filter, to another short rubber hose, then to another steel line that threads into the carburetor fuel inlet fitting. This is a 71 340, other small block locations may vary some but all will be similar.

My 1971 Challenger 340 has the fuel filter in the same place as Scott shows in his picture. My 74 Charger 360 has the fuel filter located below the alternator as shown in the 5th picture down of the evap sys., washer bottle and alternator on the 73 Duster 340. I just didn't know if this was the correct location on my 360. I just received a reproduction fuel line for my 74 that is one piece from the fuel pump to the Thermo-quad and has the threaded fittings on both ends. I'm trying to figure out where to cut it. Thanks .

The later engines have the fuel filter under the alt. There is a "U" shaped line that comes out of the fuel pump...then the filter...then the line that goes up to the carb.

Fine Lines didn't list a pump to carb line for my 73. I sent them my original lines and they bent me a perfect set.

Here is the fan off of my 73 318. September 72 SPD but built on Oct 12th.

The fan was repainted in the 90's but I couldn't get the spacer off. When I was redoing things a couple years ago, the spacer needed to be removed. It ended up cracking it was on there so tight. You can see what's left of the "ENGINE SIDE" stamp as well as some orange paint or possibly adhesive on the spacer and fan.

Original coil for 73 318(Challenger) Soaked in EvapoRust to reveal the stampings.



There is a three digit date code on the opposite side. I don't think I have a picture of that.

Original choke thermostat. This is the only one I've seen this way. There were 2 bolts that attached this to the intake. All the others I've seen have only used one bolt with a tab on the other end.

These next two are off of a 73 Cuda 340 that was built a week after my Challenger in Oct 72. These were taken when the car was only a few months old. The car is still owned by the original owner and only has 36,000 miles on it.

The original carb never acted right. It was replaced very early on.(along with the air cleaner) The rest is supposed to be original.




What I notice is...
gray throttle return spring
light green kickdown spring
unpainted heater hose fitting
BLACK PLUG WIRES (owner says this is what the car came with)
black dipstick handle
not really an engine detail but the master cylinder cover is not zinc dichromate plated...it looks phosphated
no fuel filter on top of the intake
a piece of insulation around one of the heater hoses

I believe this pic was sent to my by Mike Mancini. It's of a 73 318 and he circled the painted rubber valve cover gasket. I also see paint marks on the EGR valve hoses. Yellow stripe on the short hose from carb to "T". Then white from the "T" to the EGR valve. It looks like light blue on the line that goes from the "T" to the valve on the firewall but the FSM shows it being green.

The plug wires are black on this engine too. I have no idea if they were replaced or if they are supposed to be original.

The harder to see details, things you'd see with the air cleaner removed and from angles other than the typical few feet away hood open/car show angles are what's really needed.

Do you mean replicating the ink stamp when a fan is being restored? If so there are ink stamps made for that now (as well as the "Engine Side" stamps) I've also got my own in the works because I'm not happy with the accuracy of the current versions.

The part#'s being stamped into each of the blades vs the ink stamped versions (and a 3rd version with just a small pentastar and number without the full part#) was a variable depending on when your car was built. I think more info. is needed on this topic concerning which is right for which application, year, etc.

I need the ink stamp for the clutch, I have a nice tight clutch but can hardly make out the numbers

Here are some more of a 216 I have here. For the life of me I can not find ANYTHING that makes it different from a 215 other than the ink stampings and that the 215 lacks the embossed Pentastar and the 46237 in each blade tip. Unfortunately I do not know what this came off of. I media blasted it but taped over and saved the ink stamping, the hub did have the "Engine Side" stamping.

I can see with my eyes that the blade tip shapes are a match, dead nuts, but just to humor the thought I did trace them both on paper, exact match.

Black one looks like it has more of an arch to me, with a flatter curve in the silver.

I checked the parts book;

215 - 18" diameter. (Valiant & Dart w 340)

216 18.5" diameter. (Multiple cars, 318, 340 & Hemi)

You just found it Barry, I don't see any difference in the archs but the blades on the 216 are 1/4" longer, the difference is between that raised rib and the outer tip, man what an optical illusion!

Barry is right Scott...I've been through it, 18.5 for the 216, 18 for 215.
Blades are definately different cut/pitch.
If you look close at your stacked pictures you can see it.

Terry, no argument there, Barry was right. I just put both on a flat table top and measured each, the 215 is 2.25" "deep" and the 216 is 2.50" deep.

Once I finally realized that the blades are different lengths I quit comparing. I just found it odd that they were apparently the same (and as it turns out they are not).

Can you add anything to the big picture as to when the part# was stamped into the blades as opposed to ink stamped? The info I have is inconsistent so far.

Do you mean replicating the ink stamp when a fan is being restored? If so there are ink stamps made for that now (as well as the "Engine Side" stamps) I've also got my own in the works because I'm not happy with the accuracy of the current versions.

The part#'s being stamped into each of the blades vs the ink stamped versions (and a 3rd version with just a small pentastar and number without the full part#) was a variable depending on when your car was built. I think more info. is needed on this topic concerning which is right for which application, year, etc.

I read somewhere, perhaps here on Moparts, that the earlier years used the stamped blades and later used ink.
Not sure if by later meant 70-71 up ?.
Perhaps it had to do with AC as well.
The majority of AC cars I have seen had the stamped numbers.
Could also have been more than one vendor for the blades, one stamping them, one using ink.

And I heard the same but based on Barry's 70 examples (stamped in metal) vs. my ink stamped examples, I'm not sure which happened when or why. As you mentioned, a second vendor could easily be the case.

If any of you guys have any 216 or 215 blades (stamped either way) and know what year car etc. they came off of, please post your examples.

This is a 215 fan from my 69 340 4-speed with factory air. 69 340s with no air had the same 215 fan. But only 340s with air did have this thermal fan clutch part 2863263 (except clutch 2863266 if 2.76 axle). Non air 340s had a different non-thermal fan clutch. The only marking I found anywhere on the fan assembly is this 46237 emboss on the hub.

This fan clutch is a parts counter replacement date coded 7/30/73 (G30=7/30, year=DB?) but otherwise identical to a 69 factory Eaton part, according to Pampered Corvettes, who recently restored it with a date code preceding my SPD 11/8/68.

Interesting, your 72's fan blades have stamped numbers (not ink stamped). My 71's was ink stamped. Since I've seen both versions on multiple years it points towards more than more than one supplier.

This car has very few things changed since new.Original owner added another horn for some reason and a tach. Also, that darned white nylon wire tie in one photo.

Also notice in photo of dip stick. from stop up, appears to be dipped or painted in black paint. very worn now but appears very thin.. almost ink like.

Show absolutely no sign of any blue paint and appears properly aged to be original. Dipstick was one of the items added after engine painted I believe.

Yes, my 71 340 dip stick was the same, so was my NOS one, EXTREMELY thin black paint that falls off with little contact. Also, your negative battery cable is unpainted as was my 71 engine's. I'd be interested in knowing what bolt head markings are on the fasteners (all of them).
