Hi everyone, i'm Mark and im new to moparts.com and I need some advice or suggestions. I have a 1976 Dodge D-100 stepside 2 wheel drive. It has a 440 out of a '76 Winnebago motorhome in it. The tranny is of course a 727 TorqueFlight. It has an 8.75 posi rear with 4.10 gears. It has an Edelbrock 600 cfm 4 barrel carb sitting on a Weiand dual plane intake manifold. It has Hedman headers and currently is running dual side pipes with Series 10 Flowmasters. I love the nasty sound of the mufflers and the mild Street Pounder cam it has but it doesnt run like it should. From take off up until 2500-2750 rpms it has misses and breaks up alot but after 2750-3000 it runs decent but not where it should be. It idles really good except for a noticable miss or two here and there. I was just wondering if ya'll had any advice or suggestions for me as to what to look for and where my problem might be? And any suggestions for the best flowing exhaust for this hog would be greatly appreciated! Thanks a ton!!

Welcome...

First it sounds like you need a basic tune up to begin with. That is assuming the motor is sound inside. What's the plugs look like?

Then second for performance you need a bigger carburetor for a 440. That will wake up the top end. Is your 600 a 1405 or 1406?

You have plenty of exhaust capacity at this point with 600 carb. Yea the flowmasters are loud and I don't like them. There way better/quieter mufflers out there IMO.

with both of the above.

Stock distributor? Try disconnecting the vacuum advance. Secondary air valve on carb may be opening too soon?
Carb size is small even for a stock 440.
Do you have true side pipes or a side-exit exhaust? Most side pipes I've seen have mufflers inside.
Sounds like a nice truck.

Last summer I put new E3 plugs in it and new plug wires along with new cap and rotor and fresh oil and filter. I run synthetic oil with a Wix filter. The motor was apart and freshened up in 06, however it hasnt been inspected so it hasnt see ALOT of pavement except the test runs around the block that i take lol. Yes it has a stock distributor, the one that was in the motor when it was in the motorhome yet. A local engine builder did the work on it and put a mild street pounder cam in it. It shifts fine. I will try the vacuum advance thing and see how it works. And when I first got the motor back I was running a 750 Holley carb on it and we messed with the air/fuel mixture many many times and couldnt get it close. It ran worse then with the 750 carb than it does with the 600. The Edelbrock 600 is a 1406 with the electric choke. Thanks again guys!

Oh and it has dual side exit exhaust that come out under each step. Its not true sides like the old Vettes and Cobras had with the shields, although that had crossed my mind! Lol. What size exhaust and mufflers would you guys recommend? 3 inch?

Time to pull the plugs and see what they look like. My suggestion is to put regular plugs in it, I bet yours are starting to foul? E3

The 1406 carb is really lean on a small block engine. I bet it lean on a big block engine also.

Now lean shouldn't cause it misfire at idle, but it could under load. That's why I think you need to look at your plugs again. They tell the story, must look at them often while tuning it until you get it figured out. Good luck.

I agree with the point about the carb. My 1406 was way lean for my MILD 360. I cant imagine how lean it would be on a 440. Do yourself a favor, get a calibration kit for the carb, and calibrate it as a 1405 (manual choke version of same carb). Those are setup much richer as a performance carb, instead of economy setup they give the 1406. For example, 2 steps rich in cruise and power mode on the 1406 calibration chart was still 1 step lean on the 1405 chart. So use the 1405 chart to calibrate your 1406 if you stay with it. I did a bunch of reading online for tuning that carb and then I dove right in. It let me learn a lot about carb tuning.

But if you're looking for an upgrade to make that 440 run, I think you're going to need a bigger/better carb for your combo.

I bought the E3's to try and see if it made a difference by running an expensive or better quality "so they say" compared to what I was running..the Autolite platinums. It didnt get worse or better so I will never spend the extra money on plugs again! What should I look for in a plug as far as burn in a big block? Would a 750 cfm be enough or would you go 800 cfm? I do also run the silver electronic control box not the orange box, i know there's a difference, I also run the 4 prong ballast resistor not the 2 prong if thats any help? The coil is a aftermarket hotfire coil. Stock waterpump and fuel pump. The distributor is also factory, I have been told many times to get a new one but the price of a 440 distributor is insane and wanna be sure first. Thanks

Oh damn I didnt know the manual choke 600's were set up more for performance or I would have gone with that setup. I might have to get that calibration kit and see what that does. Edelbrock, Holley or Demon guys...I've messed with Holleys and Edelbrocks but not with Demons and for me I think Holleys are harder to tune but then Ive got buddies who swear by Holley and say Edelbrocks are junk so i dont know, maybe get a 800 Demon and say the hell with it! LOL Thanks again! And if thats your car then Awesome ride man!! I love the Satellites and RoadRunners, favorite body styles. Along with the 68 and 69 Barracudas.

A carb is not going to make it miss or break up. Rebuilt motor? Is the intermediate shaft bushing installed? If so check the reluctor gap at all 8 points. If ok and you are sure the cap rotor and wires are good try an ignition box or a coil.

Yeah, I was shocked too when I found out how big of a difference it is between the calibration on the 2 carbs. I have no experience with the demon or holley carbs, but I hear great things on this board about the demon carbs. I think you can calibrate that carb to perform fairly well with your motor, but there are guys on this board who have been wrenching longer than I've been alive , so I would say to take their advice over mine.

Thanks for the compliment on the car. I have a 360 magnum based 408 going into it now, built by another member here. Putting a Holley 3310, 750cfm vac secondary, on it.

Stock distributor that is likely why your engine is not up to par. A stock RV distributor would be way slow to let timing advance!! You have a deeply geared and light by comparison truck. I think your timing should be all in by 2600 to 3200 RPM maybe earlier. I am betting its not all in until 4000 RPM with those stock RV springs in your distributor.

I would wonder about the ignition slso... I'm not sure you can run that 4 prong ballast with the chrome box? High performance units use a single ballast resistor and only four wires from the control unit. Production units typically used a dual ballast resistor and five wires from the control unit. The proper ballast is determined by the coil, and there are at least four differeent single ballast resistors. I would also agree with above about the stock distributor being slow for your application.

Any time a performance cam is added to an engine, the ignition system MUST be recalibrated to match the cam. The distributor you have now could most likely be modified to work with the cam. (Assuming it doesn't have excesssive wear or damage) The other option is to purchase a high performance distributor, but as you noted, these aren't cheap.

Motorhome 440's were noted for having VERY LOW compression from the factory. A larger performance cam with low compression will require a LOT of ignition timing to run even half way decent.

The fuel system will most likely require some recalibrating, modifing and adjusting after a cam swap. Carbs have to be tuned to the engine in order to achieve maximum performance. That 600 cfm Carb is almost certainly to small for a 440 with a performance cam. The cam will determine what size carb you need.

What are the specifications on the cam? What is the compression ratio?

Thanks again you guys for all your input, I greatly appreciate it!!! I have been around Mopars for all my 26 years lol but this one has me puzzled! I found a Mopar performance electronic conversion kit on Summit. It has distributor, the Orange electronic box and a 2 prong ballast resistor with the wires. Would that be worth a try and if so what kind of coil would run best with that combo?? And yes the plugs, wires, cap and rotor look perfect. Also I am going to try another 750 cfm Holley on this truck and see how that works...Thanks again!

What is your timing set at? The issues you reference sound way more timing related than anything else.

Dont get that kit from Ebag. Ger a remaned dist new ECU and ballast resistor from your favorite local parts house. Mopar Perf has the harness. You will be money ahead. Todays orange boxs are junk nowdays.
