Hi all. I have a 493 shortblock that I plan to bolt 84cc edelbrock heads (out of the box) onto, along with a performer RPM intake (willing to change if needed), 950 CFM carb. The compression is 10.3:1 with the heads and .039” gasket. Small headers (1 5/8 schumachers, but I’ve seen people run 10.8 with them so I’m not considering them too bad of a handicap).
It will go into a ’67 Dart, minitubbed, automatic with 3800 stall converter, 3.91 gears.
I’m looking at solid flat tappet cams. I’d like to get something that sounds nice and lumpy at idle, and will still be torquey and have enough power to (theoretically) run ~10.6 or so in the 1/4 mile.
What approximate range of duration/lift and LSA would get me there?
Right now I’m looking at Lunati voodoo solid, but don’t know how nice it’ll sound in a 493. Yeah, I know sound aint everything, but if I can’t get on it all the time I at least want it to thump a bit.
Thanks for any input.

Below are the specs of the Lunati voodoo.
Solid Flat Tappet. Pro Street/bracket race cam with excel- lent mid range to high end torque and horsepower. Needs 3500 RPM stall converter, headers, 11:1+ compression ratio and 4.10+ gearing. Rough idle. • Advertised Duration (Int/Exh): 288/296 • Duration @ .050 (Int/Exh): 259/267 • Gross Valve Lift (Int/Exh): .586/.606 • LSA/ICL: 110/106 • Valve Lash (Int/Exh): .016/.016 • RPM Range: 3000-7200 • Includes: Cam Only Part Number: 30230743 Previous Part Number: 60343

I would say 260-265ish @ .050, 110 LSA.
I would also say that 1 5/8 headers are too small for any RB Mopar, and way too small for that stroker. 1 7/8 at least on a 500 CID stroker. I didn't know anyone made them that small for big blocks.
Now I need to pin those needles, got to feel that heat Hear my motor screamin while I'm tearin up the street

You want a low LSA.. something 108 or less.. I dont know the flow rate of those OOTB heads but I would think something in a .640 lift would be greater than what the max flow lift is... you dont want a ton of duration because it would dump your low end torque but you want enough for a stroker

hi, I put the smaller Voodoo cam 251/259@050 - 566/586 lift in a 2 different motors . 1st was my 440 , 68 Satellite , made 390/95 RWHP through a 5100 stall auto. Never ran before pulling it out . Very noisey tough sound through 3" pipes and hooker muffs . WAY Louder than the 509 hydraulic before it . 2nd was a 510 wedge(69 Roadrunner) , made 430 RWHP through a 4400 stall auto , went 11.18ish , 121-2MPH if I remember . Had TTI headers , Eddy heads prepped by Dwayne Porter originally I think . Car sounded great mostly due to the exhaust duration IMO .Customer didn't want any more cam . Cant imagine the next size up being worse Headers and head flow will be the biggest issues . The 440 had maxed flow out , put cnc'd heads with different cam ( 258/258 540/540 lift) and gained 30+ RWHP The 510 had hit max flow and you could not richen it up further - it did have a 6 pack with adjustable jetting plates on the outers Both heads had stock intake port size my Tex
New best ET 10.259@129.65 . New best MPH 130.32 Finally fitted a solid cam, stepped it up a bit more 3690lbs through the mufflers New World block 3780lbs 10.278@130.80 . Wowser 10.253@130.24 footbraking from 1500rpm Power by Tex's Automotive

With the 493 they will be a handicap, IMO No big cam for you. You need a smaller cam, like the MP 528 or similer that works well with a restricted exhaust.
Even with that said, you should still be able to run into the tens with a A-Body and your 10.3 comp. and 493 combo. I just wouldnt throw alot of cam at it.
EDIT; Dave, I just bumped up a post for you from 2013 in "Question and Answer" Its Titled , "Best headers for a street 440" Check out Skeptics link, "This Test" A comparison between 2" headers and the Schumacher tri,s. o a 451 and MP 590 cam.

Thanks. I've seen that article on Schumacher's site. And on Big block dart, a guy ran 10.7 with bigger headers then slowed to 10.90 with schumachers.
I'll probably upgrade to proparts soon, just want to get the motor in first, so I'm not restricting myself to the smaller headers it's just what i have now.
thanks for the suggestions everyone.

Ill be the one who disagrees with the header size being a kill all. Are they ideal? No. Will they work ok? Yes.
Ask Squeeze. He is clickin off 10.60s with manifolds....
IDK what his cam profile is...but I assure you it is not close to a MP 528...
Ill bet its in the high 260s. Its all in the LSA with less than ideal exhaust (well that and who spec'd the grind)...Over 500 inches IIRC.
72 RR, Pump gas 440, 452s, 3800 lbs, Corked, ET Radials,. 11.33@117.72.
Same car, bone stock 346s, 9.5 comp, baby solid. 12.24@110.

Look at Comp Cams XS290S cam or if you want a bigger grind look at there XTQ286S-8 drag race cam grind I'm a big fan of less duration, especially on street cars, with as much lift as you can run Install both of them with at least 4 degrees advance on the intake lobes
Mr.Cab Racing and winning with Mopars since 1964. (Old F--t, Huh)

Remember that the cam specs is not for 500 cube so calulate whit a drop on power band by at least 500rpm ! I agree whit cab on less duration on a street car I run a 108 lobesep roller cam on mine whit just about same lift like yours but less duration and that is a monster on the street
