Saw a similar setup in a Magazine a few years ago,I think it was on Marty Robbins Race car. Im sure its really impractical but it can save on time when troubleshooting ignition problems. Whats everyone say? or

As a circle burner I am going to do that next year with my FBO box & an HEI & get back to back runs on test & tune night.

Just make sure both work
I had both tested at the local Autozone before I did anything. They were both just laying around and I was surprised they tested out ok.

Actrually back in the 70's the Mopar boxes were notorious for crapping out for no reason, they often kept an unwired spare within striking distance of the harness as cheap insurance. call me superstitious but I always keep a cheapo spare ECU and Ballast resistor in my glovebox. And for my $$$$ The FBO ECU and Coil is the BOMB for the street!

Even today the NASCAR boys carry a spare MSD on the dash to where all they have to do is flip a switch to go to the backup system.
I use an MSD 6AL on my cars hooked to a stock electronic distributor. That way if I want to go on a long trip replacment parts are as near as the local parts house. No MSD distrubutor for me!

Did you call Don? I'd be suprised if he wouldn't replace it. Did you use his coil?
A good ground is very important with any of the Mopar style boxes.
No, I never called Don, it was out of the warranty period. I did use the FBO coil, I think that was defective. After the FBO ecu failed, I replaced it a MP chrome, then I lost another ballast and then the chrome box. I replaced the FBO coil with the Accel coil I had been using along with a new 1.25ohm ballast and MP chrome box. That was 15,000 miles ago.

Best option is to ACTUALLY try them. I had a no start problem with my wagon a few years back, had the ECU from the wagon and my spare one tested at O'Rileys, they said both tested OK.
After a week of fussing and A LOT of cussing, I slammed on a different ECU from a known runner, and the wagon fired right up.
So much for being tested as 'good'.
But, back to your question, sure, why not.
I've also seen cars that had a 'stock' ECU and a performance one (like MP's chrome box) so the owner could swap between 'street' and 'race'.
