Although my 727 trans was recently rebuilt, whenever I start it cold (from an overnight or extended sitting/storage period), it takes a few moments (~10-15 seconds) for the trans to engage into the gear (say, simply to back out of the garage), then still it seems to have to wait another couple moments to actually move the car. After it runs for a few minutes it seems to be fine and I can drive away for my cruise (typically to a race or show). If it makes any difference, the trans is actually a 1972 model 727 that I've owned and run in the car since the late 1970s.

I have an auxiliary trans cooler (newly replaced), old BM Holeshot converter (bought ~1978), and a basic new shift kit (still fully automatic, but can shift manually if desired up/down). Fluid level is proper when warmed up. It's been like this for many years, even before the recent rebuild.

Car is not driven much. Any suggestions appreciated.

Yup, Pretty typical of most 727's. Im not sure how to prevent that from happening as I think its torque convert drain back. Arlen Vanke told me about some valve to install in a tranny line that helps with that but he moved away before he could help me fix that....Mine all do it too..

Sounds like converter is draining out due to not being driven. Easy fix is put it in neutral for a few seconds after starting. That fills the converter much faster than sitting in park. Same issue with my Challenger

Its just the conv draining down... you can start it
in neutral and its fills quickly OR the newer trucks
have a anti drain back check valve in the line that
you can install

My 727 used to do the same thing before it was rebuilt. My uncle rebuild the trans for me and the following is what was wrong: burnt low/reverse band, Pump gears and overrunning clutch rollers and springs.

He said that since the pump gears were bad the pump was not filling the converter fast enough.

Not saying this is what is wrong with yours but thought I'd share.

This is correct as most 727's dont fill the converter in Park unless it was modified. Does not hurt anything as mine does it also. Just start in neutral as was said and it will fill in about 5 to 10 seconds. Or install the drainback valve if it bugs you alot. Ron

Or Trans-go SK-TFSC, has modified TV that will allow the converter to charge in park. About $27 on flea-bay.

I just had my trans out for the same symptoms.Turned out there was too much clearance between the pump gears and the stater causing me to loose pressure to the 'vert.Installed new stater and all is good, snaps right in to gear.

Your results may vary
