Getting ready to rebuild 3 833's

Looking for lube recommendations before I buy a quantity

Cars won't be driven in cold weather so I am wondering if the heavy lube would be more durable (cushioning) but I know technology changes also

Heavy lube will not flow into the small nooks and crannies like the lighter viscosities will.
You don't need any 140 in a manual transmission. And, you don't want to use a GL-5 gear lube in a transmission that depends on synchronizers. It should be a GL-4.

I'd use Redline MTL.

I used Passons lube, its thin maybe like a 5/30. i hear the redline mtl and the syncromesh is good. i also would not want ATF in there.

I just had my 833OD freshened up last fall. It had ATF in it before. I put 80/90 GL-4 in it, but I just didn't like the way it shifted. It seemed stiff, especially 1st and 2nd. So I drained some gear oil out and added some ATF to replace it. It's maybe 60/40 or 50/50 gear oil to ATF.

That made a noticeable improvement. And is the way I left it.

If I had it to do over again, I think I would use Passon's oil.

Redline MTL or Jamie Passon's trans fluid.

I've run both, and I like Jamie's trans fluid better.

Who makes a gl-4 lube? I looked at a few places today and every thing I found was the gl-5.
Napa has penn syncromesh, its not very cheap though.

Amsoil makes a 75W90 manual transmission oil. Retail is around $15/quart and it is rated as GL-4 oil.

They also make a '5w30 equivelent' manual transmission oil marketed for the newer generation of manual transmissions. I have used that stuff in my FWD new process transmissions and found it was no different in shift quality vs regular non synthetic 5w30 engine oil.

I run Red Line MTL in my 18 spline. It's a tranny that when you're driving hard you don't baby..the name of the game is grab the gear hard during a quick shift.
