I made a switch that looks like a trigger on the pistol grip. Racing I shift from first to second, then second overdrive and then third overdrive.

You can see the wire in the picture running down the back of the shifter, it's held on with a narrow strip of double sided tape. No one notices it. The GV gives you one fast shift on the strip, I use it going from second to second over, it probably does help the times. I use the car on the street a lot and tend to dip the clutch when I switch the overdrive in because its very harsh if you don't. I don't use the clutch if I have my foot to the boards and the revs are up. A floor switch would make it difficult to dip the clutch.

I guess it would be difficult to hide the wire on a round bar type shifter but it's the best place for the switch. It's an 18 spline 4 speed and I took a few teeth off the cluster gear a few years ago and had to fit a new one. Not sure whether the OD caused the damage or not, it happened on the street changing down.

The motor was never dyno'd but my best time on the strip is in my sig and should give you some idea.
