I had a odd ball weld job the other day.. one of my
neighbors brought over the lever to the rear blade
for his tractor... it had broken off right at a larger
boss area.. I knew the handle was steel and I thought
the boss was as well... well it didnt want to tack together
so by chance I pulled out a magnet to check what I
had... the boss area was cast alum and the handle
was steel... I said.. what the hell is this.. after
cleaning it a bit with a die grinder I seen the handle
was either pressed into the casting or it was cast
around the handle.... I ground back the alum on one
side to get to the steel about 1/8" then I tigged on it to build
up some material then I added a reinforcement piece
and welded that to it then welded the handle to both
the original steel and the reinforcement metal...
turned out real nice and was as strong if not stronger
than before... but it took way more time than I figured,,
but it was a freebie anyways
