IS it ok to install an inline fuel filter before my mechanical fuel pump and 1 after the pump?

No, only the sock in the tank should be used. It's much courser than a filter made to go after the pump.

If the sock filter has been removed, you can use a 100 micron prefilter such as: http://www.robbmcperformance.com/products/filters.html

The filter after the pump is usually a 40 micron.

I removed the sock in my tank and use a 3/8 sending unit and a Fram cartrige type filter before my electric fuel pump and then have the metal inline filter at the carb. It runs 10.70's like that with no sign of any fuel starvation. I feel safer with a filter by my carb to make sure no grud can get in the carb even though the filter before the pump should catch everything. You can see the inline filter in this pic. Ron

That "fram" filter is designed to go after the pump, Ron. It's a 5 micron filter!!, no wonder you have had vapor lock problems. Just saying and trying to help. Your killing your fuel pump sucking through a 5 micron filter, crazy.

Most paper element filters are 10 microns, I'm almost positive you can't get any better fuel filters than those I have used a 100 micron in line filter between the electric fuel pump and the tank after finding out the hard way that the 10 micron filter was to small to use thier I used a 10 micron filter after the pump after that

According to Summit Racing, the Fram deal is as fine as 5 microns! web page

Its not actually the Fram brand but it looks like that kind. I see plenty of people run them before the pump all the time and this is pumping a ton of fuel. I never had a vapor lock problem as it was fuel boiling in the carb and running rich and loading up when it happened and it happened before I had that filter on it as that was one of the reasons I changed it to see if it makes a difference. They said it would work fine this way and it is supposed to be a 50 micron according to the speed shop where I bought it. I honestly dont remember the brand name as it was in a white box and has no name on the filter. It looks like the Fram filter but it does not say Fram on it as it has no name on it. I actually have not had any more problems since I put it on and went to a smaller air cleaner so it did not hold as much heat around the carb bowls. It ran the same 10.70's like this as when I had no filter before the pump but I did not like to leave it with no filter before the pump since I get pump gas. Ron

Might want to check for sure the micron rating of it. I'll bet you it's 10 microns which is no good for before the pump. Every canister fram look a like that I saw was 10 microns.

I have seen plenty of people run them too before the pump, don't make it right.

I did too, many years ago in the 80s. My car left me stranded too many times when I was running a electric pump, long before ethanol.

I figured out fuel flow when I went drag racing, have to, to go fast. Kinsler was my mentor and taught me all about fuel systems. I just try to share what I learned.

There are many choices today. I like steel housing filters for the street, as large as I can fit. The Fram deal at 5 or so microns is as fine as you can get and is steel and has a larger housing than most.

Robbmc above suggested some filters, you should check them out.

Kinsler always suggested there filters which were larger than most other's with more square inches of removable stainless screen inside, larger is better I believe.

Both my street cars are using a factory vapor separator for filters with no problems.

All I can say is I have had no problems but I looked at some to see what brand it might be and it looks to be either an Aeromotive , Professional Products or Jegs. You are right as two of them say a 10 micron filter but the Aeromotive is does have a 100 micron filter in one of theirs. But none of them say before or after the pump. But if you are correct then I can look into the 100 micron filter and be sure it will work good. Thanks , Ron

don't use any cellulose type filters on the suction side of a pump. high micron screens can work on the suction side. ron, if you can take your filter apart look to see if there's a screen in it.

Found it, Yes I have run that filter and see no problem with it. Should do the job just fine.
