I never got tired of the looks at shows or even out on the road at a gas station when I lifted that hood off.

They make a repop with hinges. I assume it's made of steel.

No it's made of fiberglass with the hood hinge thread hardware holes in the same place as a standard hood. The place in Florida (Cocoa area) makes an A12 style hood but without the underside "airbox".

Problems checking the oil or general repairs? You mean these cars are driven? No they can't be!

Personally I have a lift off hood on my 72 duster. I enjoy it. It was always fun at car shows to take it off. The wind issues SUCK! I didn't have mine pinned on the car one day. Pulled it out of the shed to clean the shed. Not thinking it was windy out of the south car facing south. Yeah it went flying! Should add mines only weighs I bet 15-20 pounds. Really thin and light. Let's just say it was still one piece just had a few good battle marks on it.

As far as having an actual a12 car. I'd love it and drive it!

I guess I'm the only one that finds it an issue because I think I'm the only one that drives it! Someone above mentioned what a novilty the hood is to people that aren't into A12's. I tend to forget that I guess because it's always been driven a lot for what it is.

When I owned my A12 RR I heard quite a few times
I really like your car, what did the factory hood look like, or nice car but why did you paint the hood black and put that big scoop on it.

And the classic "I wonder why the owner didn't paint the hood?" or "When are you going to paint the hood?"

like mike said you need a stand to lay the hood on when your working on the car alone. I always thought of rigging something up in my garage I could just hang the hood on so it wouldn't take up so much room in the garage but I never got around to it. But not really a problem to me.

I was at a car show once, had my hood up on my props, and was asked by a lady if I could drive it with the hood up like that? ( She was serious )
I said yea only once.
She walked away with a confused look on her face.

I have mixed emotions with the lift off hood. It is cool..but it is a pain. The biggest scratch in my car came when I was pulling into the Nats in '96 and my car went up in flames. I jumped out, pulled all 4 pins, and tossed the hood into the grass right there in front of the place. In my haste, I scratched the top of the passenger side fender. I left the scratch as a reminder that it could have been worse. The next few chips in the paint happened when I twisted my car beating on it and blew the window out. But that's a story for another day And yes, I will back Mike (A12) on the story of his hood.

Restoring a car to look "only" as good as the factory made it is like getting a boob job for your wife and having the doctor make them two different sizes to seem more natural

I'm pretty sure it can be said that the A12 Lift-Of-Hood is by far the BEST PERFORMANCE FRESH AIR INTAKE HOOD EVER TO BE PUT ON ANY PRODUCTION CAR IN HISTORY!! (Production meaning more than 500 assembly line built cars by a major manufacture ). The hood scoop design is found on lots and lots of race cars to this day and it is probably the most copied and used scoop design out there..............................BUT as a practical design with not having it hinged well that makes that a PIA.....so it is the lack of hinges that is the biggest negative and the fact that you cannot change from outside fresh air to a protected air source that gives it two thumbs down

The AAR and T/A hoods are great example of the perfect A12 hood.....but who wants an E-body with 3x2's and a small block

My A12 hood had the opening's center support broken from lifting it with the scoop.

I don't have any numbers to back this, compared to 383/Hemi RRs and SBs, it seems A12's were ordered with a greater % of vinyl tops. Maybe ordered with the fore-thought for a place to set the hood without scratching paint?

Oh and I forgot about the AM radio interference from the lack of shielding by the A12 fiberglass hood that was also a source of complaints by owners...............and once again the AAR's and T/A's got the benefit of the A12 owners doing production testing for all of those little nuisances so they moved the AAR-T/A antennas to the rear.......the perfect A12 hood and antenna location for the hood too

my car is not a real a12 but its got real a12 parts. hood can be a bear at a cruise in when your by yourself (usually try to recruit some help from a passer by to get it on the roof). i just use a paint stand like mentioned above when im at home. i have a lift off on my dart also, but its alot lighter and that car has a vinyl top so its never a issue to toss that one up on the roof by myself.

I've never owned one of these cars but the topic prompted this question; I've seen a lot of original hoods that have what appear to be stress cracks around the scoop center support.

I assume, if you're pulling the hood by yourself, the only logical place to pick it up is through the scoop opening. Do most of you find that this causes the center of the hood to deflect and ends up causing the cracks? Just curious.

my hood was very broken and cracked when i got it. i added a little extra fiberglass in that area when i painted it.
