My idiot brother hydroplaned my sister's '01 Ford Sport Trak into a water-filled ditch Thursday night. I took a look at it today & couldn't detect water in the cylinders but the intake plenum was very wet so I used the shop vac on that. Tried to turn it over (with the starter) to see if water would shoot out of the cylinders but it doesn't move, sounds like a dead battery or bad starter. Checked the battery & it's good, no reason to suspect the starter. Does it sound like it's hydrolocked? Never had this issue before so any input would be welcomed.

Yeah, I pulled the plugs & tried to crank it but got nothing. Didn't try cranking it manually yet, just not feeling up to it.

If it won't crank by the starter and the battery is charged, and the only thing that happened was that he sucked down a bunch of water by forging through a flood.... I'd be afraid the motor is a mangled mess inside. Fluids don't compress. Metal bends and cracks.

If there's a bolt on the front so you can hand crank it with a breaker bar like we can then I'd pull the plugs & see if it is free. I'm assuming there is no bolt as that'd be the first thing to do. As you said no reason for the starter to have died at that point in time, same with the battery.

Smacking water does tend to shock the chassis. Something might have rattled loose.
Being all computerized, your no starter issue might very well be electronics related, not like the old days when things were real simple. Does the starter even make any noise or appear to attempt to turn over? Did the inertia switch trip? I forget if they DOA kill starter or just the fuel pump.
They say there are no such thing as a stupid question. They say there is always the exception that proves the rule. Don't be the exception.

what if its a bad starter ? crank it by hand , if it doesnt move -your brothers an idiot
it's possible, but how likely is it that the starter goes bad from one heavy splash/submersion?
It is very likely. When I worked as a wrench every time we had a rainfall that flooded the storm drains (aka water on the streets) we were changing out starters left and right.

Most newer starters arent like the old ones.Different insides. If you smack them with a hammer like old ones to get them to start they will crack inside.I had a Pontiac at work that a guy drove thru a flooded street.Died and the whole air box was full.that and it wouldnt crank.Sat inside for a few hours and pulled plugs and finally cranked.New plugs, oil change and air filter and all was good.Rocky
