Hey guys- looking for some input on head choice and what people are running. It's been a LONG time on a LA build for me. Putting together a 340 street/strip (OK- a strip car with turn signals and looking at a set of ported W2's & victor intake VS some Eddy RPM's run through a CNC porting job. RPM range 3000-7500; 727 trans; 4.10's; not sure on cam yet-probally Comp XE 285/545 range Any thoughts on the two?

Depending on the port job on the W-2s.. but they will flow more if done right... BUT they are iron so thats 40# more on the front end... so basically its a wash.. I run the W-2s on my Rampage and its in the 580 hp range for a street/strip mainly street... but I'm still looking to get my W-5s fixed to use them... also I'd look for a better cam.... JMO

Mr. P, yeah the 40# is some weight, but currently she's got a RB in there all aluminum except the block- so roughly about the same as the LA iron set-up. I have to buy headers either way, so yes it is a wash. Any good cam recommendations? What's in the Rampage?

The cam I have in the Rampage is a old MP roundy round roller that I had laying around the shop(that whole engine is just shop junk except for the lower compression pistons).. but its a 260/270 .640/.640 with a 105 lsa installed at 105... this is a 416ci

Sense you are changing everything. Headers bell housing etc. And you want something that will scream. You really should look at a R5P7. The cost would turn out roughly the same. You can run an adapter between the engine and your big block transmission.

There is a set of W2's with intake and rockers in Race parts for sale for a really good deal. FYI

I would not run a hydraulic camshaft!!! And in my opinion, any cylinder head that gets rid of the pushrod pinch is going to have more potential. Therefore I personally believe the w2 has more potential for more horsepower. But I also think that a ported edelbrock is plenty for only 340 cubes, and is going to make more midrange torque, be lighter, and have better combustion chamber. And personally, with only 4.10 gears and a somewhat tight converter that you plan, I feel the edelbrock may work better, due to the smaller intake port for better air speed and torque. There is also the Indy ta head that is a edelbrock that the pushrod holes are moved, and they use a 440 rocker system and factory intake and header patterns.

They were leaking oil into the cylinders big time.. a qt every 35 miles... I finally put my W-2s on and the issue went away.... when I get back home I'll take a look at them to find the problem

What's the good word on rods for a 7000 rpm 340 these days?
If you have not already bought a crank you can get one with 2.100 or 2.000 rod journals. BPE and callies make them. Then you can get 6.125, 6.200, 6.250 and even 6.300 length rods, with sm. chevy big end and pin dimensions. Plenty of good rods out there. Wiseco, diamond and others have shelf pistons with .927 pins and will do one change to the piston for $5 a piston. That way you can put the longer rod in and have a shorter lighter piston.
On the cyl heads, there is a new one out, and I believe in stock now called Airwolf, flows over 300CFM, and uses ordinary LA parts. There has been lots of talk about airwolfs on this site.
I did the same thing on my 440 stroker with the .927 pins & SBC big ends on a custom Ross piece. Man, together they weigh just over 1000g! That engine really wraps up fast for a 489. I probally will go with the same set-up on the LA bottom end.
As far as the heads, well I might just grab those W2s for sale here and save $1500. over ported Eddys, Indys, Airwolfs, etc. Not to mention the W2s come with HSharp rollers and Victor intake.

Now spend some of that money on a good head porter and be way head of the game.
