Anyone driving an early 80's Charger, Omni or Rampage with a 2.2 with an automatic?? If so....what kind of fuel economy are you getting?

Thanks!!!

has the fuel economy ratings. I got about 17-19 with my 85 Charger, but I was in highschool and really didn't treat it that well. the economy got worse when we swapped the 2.2 turbo out of my mom's wrecked shadow into it but the fun factor went up a fair bit.

17-19 ? .... did you have a hole in yurr gas tank ? ... I had a TC3 2dr ... 1.7 stick shift ... I never got less than high 20's city ....and nearly 50 on the hwy. My Xwife had a 024 with a 2.2 and a stick ... she got in the low 30's ....

FIND a stick if possible. ALSO there can be major probs with the AT's back in those years.

You must have missed the part where he said he was between 17 -19 years old at the time? How many 17 year old kids really drive for gas mileage? (I'm 57 and still don't drive for gas mileage.)

I never had a carb'ed 2.2, but the throttle body auto trans one I had was consistently in the 25-30 range, but I had my foot in it a lot. They were a bit underpowered by the standards we were used to at the time. We also got a very consistent 25-30 from our Turbo Lebaron GTs, (we had 4 of them, all went over 200,000 each) they had a lot more go, but again, we were not really concerned about fuel mileage.

The car we were most impressed with, as far as fuel mileage, was the 95 Intrepid (3.3 V6) that followed the last Lebaron, it was 30 mpg always, and it had power and room. We are pretty disappointed with the mileage we are getting from our turbo PT Cruiser, its in the 20-25 (on a good day). Gene

mid 20's if your easy with it. The 3spd automatic is direct in 3rd and those early ones do not have a lockup TC. Carburetors on those things were garbage when they were rolling off the transport trucks. The non feedback version are somewhat better.

Fuel injection and a manual transmission really help the 2.2 with mileage.

I have a 4dr Shadow manual transmission (2.2 TBI) and I get around 27.5 in local stop-go driving. Ethanol polluted gasoline doesn't help anything.

Had this on the 'bag and thought I sold it last week, guess the high bidder flaked out. I drove an 82 Rampage 2.2 4-speed for 2 years as my daily and I would have been lucky to get more than 20 mpg out of it. My soon-to-be daily driver is an 83 Scamp and as soon as the weather changes I will find out what the Scampage will get for mpg!

The funny thing about science is that if you change one miniscule parameter you change the entire outcome to the way you want it.

yes, considering a 2.2 with an automatic for a parts chaser/daily driver, etc.

my throttle body 2.5 auto daytona would do low to mid 30s on the highway. my dad had an 83 rampage auto and his would do about 30. lousy feedback carbs, we swapped it out for a weber and it drove better. with the small tires and no lockup converters they do rev on the highway.

ok so if a person had an 82 2.2, automatic and wanted to change over to a fuel injection set up and manual transmission....what OEM style fuel injection do you guys advise using that is not a pain in the ass to work on or get parts for?

That swap would be a PITA !! ... I would look for a mid/late 80's G body......2.2 and a FIVE speed.

you both read correctly. I was 16-18 years old and getting 17-19 mpg. I would say a properly maintained vehicle that didn't have a teenager trying to make the tires spin at every intersection would get better mileage. That E-brake between the seats makes them really fun to drive though

Thanks! Guess I never really paid any attention which body code those cars were?

So if I bought an 82 Rampage 2.2 with an automatic and got a little crazy and decided to change the drivetrain from a Daytona or Laser with a 2.2 and a 5-speed, it ought to get the little Page rockin' better than the original 2.2 and automatic and get better fuel economy??

you WILL run into more problems
Rampage is a "L" body

for one, Daytona/laser axles to long
also auto to standard
The spline count is different

If you need 2.2/auto
I still have them
still got the 4 lug rims also

The Rampage ran well,
the unibody started to split

So, it's last trip was
to haul a 440/auto for a heart transplant
into the Rampage

As I said and so did dragon .... THIS is a swap that is complex. Just buy a Daytona or maybe even a Neon with a stick. BUTTT honestly ...I have my mind set on a 2 dr Omni or Horizon with a 1.7(VW engine) and a 4 speed stick with that GOOOOOD OD. I have put a wanted ad here and other places for it without any luck so far.

There are HUGE real-world mpg potentials with that combo.
